New Delhi, Jul 30: The Centre on Wednesday said certain BS-III vehicles manufactured before 2016 may require replacement of some rubber components and gaskets when operated with E20 petrol, while maintaining that the fuel does not adversely affect overall vehicle performance.
Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said the issue is limited to BS-III vehicles introduced from April 1, 2005, and manufactured before 2016. He added that the affected parts can be replaced during routine vehicle servicing.
"Only in case of testing done on BS-III vehicles introduced from April 1, 2005, and manufactured prior to 2016, some rubber parts and gaskets may require replacement, which can be easily managed during the routine servicing regime of the vehicle," Gadkari said.
He noted that extensive studies conducted by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Dehradun, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) found no significant difference in the performance of vehicles running on E20 fuel.
According to the studies, even older vehicles did not show abnormal wear and tear or any major issues related to drivability, engine startability, metal compatibility or plastic compatibility.
Addressing concerns over fuel efficiency, Gadkari said automobile manufacturers and vehicle testing agencies have clarified that mileage depends on several factors and cannot be attributed solely to the type of fuel used.
He also said vehicle manufacturers have assured that warranty claims for vehicles using E20 petrol will continue to be honoured.
The minister said the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme has been implemented in a phased and scientifically validated manner.
India launched the programme as a pilot project in 2001, followed by the introduction of E5 petrol in 2006. While ethanol blending remained around 1.53 per cent until 2013-14, it has steadily increased in subsequent years with the expansion of production capacity, infrastructure and the required regulatory framework.
