New Delhi, Aug 2: India's power consumption rose 10.93 per cent year-on-year to 170.70 billion units (BU) in July, driven by increased use of cooling appliances such as air conditioners amid high humidity across several parts of the country.

According to official data, the country's total power consumption stood at 153.88 BU in July 2025.

Experts attributed the rise in electricity usage to the high "feels-like" temperatures caused by humid weather conditions, which led to greater dependence on cooling appliances despite the monsoon season.

The country's peak power demand also increased significantly to 270.20 GW in July from 220.74 GW in the corresponding month last year. The demand remained close to the all-time high of 270.82 GW recorded in May this year.

For comparison, the peak power demand in May last year was 230.99 GW, while the highest demand during last summer was 242.77 GW, recorded in June 2025. This, however, remained below the government's projected peak demand of 277 GW.

Experts expect electricity demand to remain stable through August as humid conditions are likely to persist during the ongoing monsoon season.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected below-normal rainfall during this year's southwest monsoon, a factor that could continue to influence power consumption in the coming weeks.
