Mangaluru, Aug 4: "We ourselves are destroying the environment around us. Our selfishness and irresponsibility are the root cause of the terrible natural disasters that occurred in Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu in 2019," said Dr G Santhosh Kumar, project director of the District Urban Development Cell.

He was speaking after inaugurating a special environmental information camp organized for the conveners and secretaries of the Environment Commission, held under the leadership of the Environment Commission of the Catholic diocese of Mangalore at the Bendur Church hall in the city.

"The work of saving and conserving the environment in our country must happen on a war footing. We are facing difficult situations today precisely because we have ruined nature. The responsibility of protecting the environment and handing it over safely to our next generation rests upon all of us," he stated.

Prof Rajendra Kalbhavi, executive director of the Dakshina Kannada District Nirmiti Kendra, and Nagaraj Bajal, project manager of Hasiru Dala, provided information on practical ways of environmental conservation.

The programme was attended by Louis J Pinto, secretary of the Environment Commission of the Mangalore diocese, Dr Michael Santhumayor, executive committee member of the Environment Commission, Fr Faustine Lobo, director of Father Muller Institutions, Sr Flavia Wilma, Celestine D'Souza, Clement Pinto, Francis Menezes Balkutaje, Jeet Milan Roche, and Charles Pais.
