Bangalore: BJP has Nearly All of Congress's Sins - and a Few of its Own

Amulya Ganguli

Bangalore, Mar 24 (IANS):
There does not appear to be much hope for the BJP to emerge as a major challenger to the Congress in 2014, although the latter is now much weaker than it was at the time of the last general election.

It isn't only that no front-runner has appeared in the saffron outfit in the leadership tussles between L.K. Advani, Narendra Modi, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj, the latest developments in Karnataka and Gujarat confirm that where lust for power is concerned, the BJP has become a mirror-image of the party it loves to hate - the Congress.

Arguably, this fall from grace of an organization claiming to harbour spiritual-minded Rambhakts - devotees of the Hindu deity - was inevitable considering that its rise was based on the pseudo-religious plank of temple building and minority-baiting.

Since there was no ideological inspiration other than the flaunting of a provocative Hindu agenda and demonising of Muslims and Christians, it was only to be expected that the BJP would comprise elements, not all of whom could be regarded as true representatives of virtuous conduct.

Nowhere has this evidence of degeneration been more evident than in Karnataka, which first saw the BJP members being accused of corruption - B.S. Yeddyurappa and the Bellary brothers - and then, after their eviction from office following a Lokayukta verdict, continuing to find ways and means of regaining their lost authority.

Hence, Yeddyurappa was first dragged kicking and screaming from the chief minister's post and now the same spectacle may be witnessed if and when his successor, Sadananda Gowda, is asked by the BJP "high command" - as in the much-maligned Congress - to make way for his predecessor.

The only difference between the two parties is that the BJP top brass, unlike its Congress counterpart, is a house divided and, therefore, far more vulnerable to pressure tactics by groups wielding the caste - Yeddyurappa belongs to the Lingayats who constitute 18 percent of the electorate - or the party's standard communal card.

The fractures in the BJP's top echelons of power are the result of an inability to find a suitable replacement for Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the last and only moderate in the saffron brotherhood who had some understanding of India's multi-cultural polity.

Others, notably Advani and Modi, have been trying to remould themselves in Vajpayee's image but without success because of their deeply-hued saffron past - the breaking of the Babri masjid in Advani's presence in 1992 and the communal riots in Modi's Gujarat in 2002.

But it isn't only the craving for power, a natural urge among politicians, which guides the votaries of Hindutva. Another natural inclination has manifested itself, with a section of BJP legislators spending time in the Karnataka and Gujarat assembly chambers watching pornographic films on their mobiles.

The shift of focus to erotica will seem also the more strange for a party which not only wants to enforce the teachings of the Bhagvad Gita in Madhya Pradesh schools but also advises those who do not want to study the Hindu spiritual text to leave the country, presumably for Pakistan.

If the Congress is guilty of minority appeasement, the BJP can be charged with offering a gratuitous affront to the minorities. If the BJP is genuinely interested in teaching the sacred texts, it can choose passages from all the major faiths, as India's pluralism demands. But singling out a Hindu scripture is evidently motivated by reasons other than an emphasis on spiritual knowledge.

As the BJP further exposes its narrow-minded agenda, its organisational fault lines have also been highlighted with the latest contretemps over the Rajya Sabha nominations which have dented the credibility of the party president, Nitin Gadkari, more than that of his unknown candidate, the London-based Anshuman Mishra.

If Gadkari had earlier caused a flutter in the party by trying to induct Babulal Kushwaha, a tainted former minister in Mayawati's government, his latest initiative, which saw Mishra lash out at "dead wood" in the BJP, cannot but strengthen the hands of Gadkari's detractors who have never quite accepted this choice of a "provincial" from Maharashtra as party chief by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Given the BJP's current rocky ride, it is not surprising that the Congress has won surprising victories in two by-elections in Karnataka and Gujarat. The Congress's success in Udupi-Chikmagalur is noteworthy as much for the margin of victory, 45,724 votes, as for the fact that the constituency was considered the BJP's stronghold which elected Sadananda Gowda in 2009.

Mansa in Gujarat, too, was a BJP stronghold since the party had won it since 1995. But the Congress's victory by 8,000 votes is a welcome development, considering that the assembly elections will be held in the state by the end of the year.

While the Congress, after its recent setbacks in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Goa, can breathe a sigh of relief, the same cannot be said of a BJP mired in scandals and political quagmires.

I predict victory for Congress and other Secular parties in the next Parliamentary elections in 2014. Congress will surely increase its tally from 208 to 225 and along with secular allies will form the next Government. BJP on the other hand will not cross more than 100 seats. Many things will change in another two years and Congress will bounce back. I had predicted victory for Congress in 2009. Same thing I am predicting now for 2014. Jai HO Congress.

I am not against reservation. But reservation should be for economically backward people and not on caste/creed basis. That too should be only for education, not for employment.

I had reservation for my caste. But I got B.E seat in Merit quota.

I have seen a friend of mine who was coming in car for the college and getting yearly scholarship of Rs 15,000 and no semester exam fees, all books free and lot more. All these benefits just because he is SC. He was not so good at studies. In the 7th semester Bharath Electronics Limited(BEL) came to our college and hired him. BEL hired three students from our class, all three belongs to SC/ST.

Even I had attended this BEL interview though I was not interested in Govt job. In the written test we had to mention our caste category in the paper! I cleared written and went for technical interview. Two people were there in the panel. As soon as I entered one person addressed me "Yenappa, Chennagiddiya, ninna hesaru yenu?". I also spoke in Kannada and later I realized that those people does not speak good English. I understood their caliber and decided this is not the place for me and came out.

This is what happening due to reservation dude. HAL, ISRO, ONGC, NAL, BHEL, BEL, IOCL, Railways are all filled with incompetent people. In these companies all core parts are imported from other countries, only outer body, accessories are manufactured by these incompetent people. BEL supplies metro trains to BMRCL. But the engine is from German/japan. They build only bogy & piant.

If these companies had competition like private companies, India would have been powerful in defence, infrastructure, technology.

I had financial problem during my studies and took bank loan for studies. Now we are financially stable and we do not seek any Govt benefits.

But the person I mentioned here, will get benefits for his lifetime, children, grandchildren. Infact his father is in central Govt job.

Dont you think this hurts people?

Dear Sharath,Mangalore, some clarification for your comments...yes Congress defeated in AP because that segments are from TELANGANA area(All people irrespective of Party batting for Separate Telangana state).Another one constituency from YSR son's.It's like if Yeddy/friends resigns to BJP and forms own party to contest again, can BJP win that constituency? One or other way you are also always batting for certain party which is your discretion right.

Another important thing is regarding Shahnawaz Kukkikate, one gentleman termed him as Terrorist's brother then I did not see you in favor of him, neither you condemned the comments. So,it is marriage of convenace I should say.

I totally agree with Dinesh this time. It's congress Who care for Dalits, SC n ST etc. Even minorities. Congress gave reservation for these people n today they ate all in govt job everywhere. Even Dinesh has been educated bcz of congress policy. Congress does not help poor people so that they may vote for them in the future. No, want to educate the backward class so that they may secure good job and stand on it's feet. BJP has not done anything for back wards. There's is vote bank policy. Backwards are for voting BJP. High class are to rule them. Latest political senario showed us how high cast Lingayats treated Vokaliga CM. DVS. It's hurting that still educated backward people like Dinesh did not learnt a lesson from it. But next election Karnataka public will teach a lesson to BJP.

Shanawaaz..my respect grows more for you brother with thoughts like this. Even today we live in much better communal harmony in Mangalore than what you see in this forum where people spit venom on each other in terms of religion or party. Am sure except some communal minded dominent areas in and around Mangalore where the authority usually term as communal sensitive areas, people do not have any problems with each other whether its Hindhus, Muslims or Christians. Its just that these political parties have been bit succesfull in seeding this caste based politics ,especialy in todays generation's youth.

Each one thinks that the party which advocates for them is secular & the other is communal weather its Congress or BJP. This can be washed out if the elders & good hearted religious heads in all community come togather in one stage and address these people & make them realise about the motives of these selfish political parties & their votebank politics which has divided some sect of the citizens in mind if not in practice.

I agree with u shahnawaz, All the parties have good & bad politicians. But as per your idea of electing right candidate inspite of any party this will allow unstable govt & good candidate will also fall in line with corrupt politician. Just like what happened in operation kamala. If they were voted for party how they voted again for BJP. otherway if they voted for candidate how they voted for the same candidate after he resigned from one party & joined with other party. how much this candidate to be a good politician. so cannot understand this politician.

As the people get educated, they are distancing away from congress. Mostly uneducated people vote for congress. Educated people understood the true color of congress.

    Dear Brothers Shazi/UK and Sharath/Mangalore.

Many thanks for your observation and I am honored. I hope to get continued patronage from eudcated class like you... I only believe in the welfare and happiness of masses. It should not be restricted to one particular community. It should be a national agenda as Bhagavdgita says "Sarvo jana sukhino bhavantu". With love and understanding we can bring in ever lasting peace which no money can buy. We have to shun those political parties and politicians who try to devide us...Humanity and human values matter and rules supreme.....

Never been like this we have been devided before. The society is polarised on religious lines for only few votes and for power. Power is enjoyed by a negligble percentage of our society but the true sufferers are the common people across the street. We are one and shall remain united.. Dont you all wish that our children should play in your courtyards and your children in our courtyards??? When we fought foreign enemies like British, Mughals, Dutch, Portuguese, French and off late Pakistan, we fought them as Indians and never ever the feeling of our religion has taken priority. Only partiotism and nationalism prevailed. Now when we fight the election why this high proifle devision on ethnic lines...why fundamentalism???

Lets vote for a better tommorrow, for better India for our children> Lets see sincerity and committment in the candidate and lets not go by the party.. I was very much hurt when our former Heavy Industry Minister and Railway Minister Late TA Pai was defeated just because of the party. Can we not re write the electoral history of India... Why party.. All parties are same and practicing double standards and power hungry... Why cant we send able representatives who can echo our voices in parliament and bring in prosperity and peace to our place... We the educated class has to take the lead and make a difference... Are we ready for that??? Our national wealth is our wealth we are owners

As usual Another Article to please readers like Ismail. Anyways, like RSS said other day, BJP is just after congress or finding its faults & in the chase forgot to connect with the people's aspirations or realising that they are living in the glass house which is very brittle. If it has any Moral left, Yeddi & his Chaddi gang would have beeen out of BJP by now at the cost of Karnataka Government, But Ghadkari... i believe he is the Yeddi of BJP in Center. Anyways Congress win in Udupi was expected and it was all due to personnel calibre of Mr JPH & his in touch relations with the people of his consituency . Added to this was the strong Anti-BJP wave in the state thanks to its infighting & poor governance. Only congress vote bank member like Ismail Perinje will be thinking that this was due to Pro-Congress wave, if that makes them happy, so let it be. However its a win after long time for Congress.
However Media dint bother to gave the same hype that it gave to these 2 seats in Gujrat & Karnataka to the results in Andra Pradesh, where the congress was routed out again. Thats our country Jai ho.
Shanwaz Kukkikate, appriciating your comments nowadays, good one....

It is not correct to say that Congress had lost in Punjab & UP. In fact the Congress has increased its strength in both these states both in number of seats and vote share. BJP has lost in these two States besides Uttarkhand. Only in Goa they succeeded just like Congress succeeded in Uttarkand and Manipur. Congress is always better than BJP in spite of some weaknesses. Jai Ho Congress.

Even Sidaaramiah. If the Congress unites under Krishna Byre Gowda then victory is definite.

Similar case me to know as Ismail Perinje explained. My mother in law was admitted In Kasthurba Hospital Manipal for leg fracture. During that time Vajpayee was PM. One elderly man from GSB community was there waiting for artificial leg. I just asked him what happened to him. He was having diabetes problem. He along with his son went to Banglore to get Gas agency. His local BJP leader sent him to Banglore to get MLA signature. The BJP MLA n his staff insulted him. While returning back to hotel it was raining n flooded. Both had to cross the road in flooded water by his unluck one of his leg got effected in dirty flood water. Whole leg started getting black. They started journey back to Shimogga. Tried to treat, but he was referee to Kadturba, where they cut his leg up to the thigh the gangrene had spread so much. He abused BJP so much. His son was so sad his dad was insulted. Same guy told me, must drink Kahi Kasaya every week. Since then I drink it every Thursday. God bless him. He told me I thought BJP is our people, but they were looking for big money bag. They asked 3 lacks for a signature.

We all must know that, “Thief will come at night or when no one at place to rob but the law people will come and take away all things in your presence”. The Congress is like thief person but BJP and its gang like Law people. We can take precautions for thief but not Law people. Law persons can make it own law and rob all things what you have and that are what BJP persons are doing now.

Whether BJP or Congress, all do business to amass wealth. In both parties there are few sincere persons who work for people and society. While voting, voters should look at the person and not the party. That way you can expect little development in your area.

It is true that BJP lost its support base due to corruption same like Cong and other political party. But they know how to get it back. Wait and watch, very soon they will create a big communal riot in D.K and other parts of Karnataka to divide the society. Then once again people of Karnataka will forget the development agenda, but vote on communal agenda of BJP, as Modi did in Gujarat. Finally poor people of both communities are the looser. God bless India from corrupt politicians of all parties.

please wait for some time and watch in Gujarat year end election..
Regarding your Third front formation it's not possible in centre because there is no suitable PM candidate if they formed a third front.

BJP's take off was during the Babari Masjid movement and now it is descending path may land@near future for engine down and greasing. As far as BJP concerned it has no programme other than politics of hate and caste. It has no vision or mission to develop our nation. It even has no dynamic leader to lead the party. When it tasted power during NDA time, it typically smelled taste of power and added corruptions like CONG.I will substantiate one particular incident here,(NDA time)one of my friend who belongs to RSS/BJP top brass family want to venture business as he choose PETROL PUMP.If divulge his exact address it will affect him.As he went to Bangalore to submit application he was asked to go to top office/in charge (?)and up on entry the concerned persons asked him "how much you brought" This shows how far these people were corrupted.Politics/power in state and Delhi are the tool of windfall wealth be it BJP or any other political party. But difference is degree of corruptions/individual.There is no big differences in any political parties when we refer corruptions/favoritism .

Third front headed by regional parties are in dictating terms to national parties. At present SP's emerging as a power of reckoning in Assembly election of UP lead to tool to bargaining even for PM post after forthcoming General MP Elections,if he succeeds in getting 40 to 45 MPs.
