Mangaluru, Aug 6: Rainfall intensity reduced across Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday, with most parts of the district receiving light to moderate showers, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert from August 6 to 8.
Moderate rainfall was reported from Karaya, Kalleri, Puttur, Uppinangady, Madanthyaru, Kokkada, Venur, Nelyadi, Guruvayanakere, Dharmasthala, Kadaba, Sullia, Subrahmanya, Bellare, Panja, Kalmakaru, Moodbidri, Mulki, Panambur, Ullal, Bajpe, Vitla, Kanyan, Peruvai and Mangaluru. The city witnessed intermittent light showers with cloudy skies and occasional sunshine.
A landslide at Annebail in Gurupur, Mangaluru taluk, completely damaged a house, while two neighbouring houses remain under threat. The occupants had vacated the house before the incident, preventing any casualties. Officials, including the PDO, Village Accountant and an engineer, inspected the site and submitted a report to the district administration declaring the house unfit for habitation and recommending compensation.
Meanwhile, clearing operations began on Wednesday at Kettikal, where a landslide on Tuesday had deposited huge boulders and large quantities of soil onto the road.
According to the IMD forecast, a yellow alert has been issued for the district from August 6 to 8, with the possibility of widespread rainfall. Strong winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are also likely along the Karnataka coast on August 7 and 8.
Health minister U T Khader is scheduled to visit rain-affected areas in Sullia, Kadaba and Mulki on Thursday. He will inspect the affected locations and hold meetings with officials to review relief and rehabilitation measures.
In neighbouring Udupi district, widespread rainfall was recorded on Wednesday morning, followed by cloudy weather during the day. Heavy rain lashed rural parts of Kundapur and Byndoor taluks, leading to waterlogging in some areas. Moderate showers were later reported from Udupi, Manipal, Hiriyadka, Malpe, Katapady, Uchila, Brahmavar, Kaup, Kundapur, Hebri and Karkala.
A house belonging to Gulabi Shetty at Anagalli village in Kundapur taluk sustained partial damage due to strong winds and rain on Tuesday, with the loss estimated at around Rs 1 lac.
The IMD has also issued a Yellow Alert for Udupi district on August 6.
