Udupi, Aug 7: An auto-rickshaw overturned after the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle on a downhill stretch of National Highway 169A near Eshwar Nagar in Manipal on Thursday night.
The mishap occurred in front of the Udupi City Municipal Council's drinking water pump house. According to preliminary information, the driver lost control while negotiating a sharp bend on the highway.
Locals said the sudden curve on the main road has been the cause of several accidents in the area. The downhill gradient, coupled with the sharp turn, has reportedly made it difficult for motorists to navigate the stretch safely.
They also pointed out that warning signboards have had little impact due to the steep descent, with many drivers failing to anticipate the abrupt curve.
Manipal police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
