Udupi: Speeding car rams scooter while overtaking, rider dies

Udupi, Aug 8: A 45-year-old scooter rider died after a Maruti Swift car allegedly rammed into his two-wheeler near a petrol pump in Shirva on Friday night, August 7.

The deceased has been identified as Prakash Acharya, a resident of Indrapura in Shirva and owner of Shirva Devi Winding Centre.

Prakash was reportedly waiting by the roadside near the petrol pump to cross the main road and take the Kuthyar road towards his home.

At around 7.30 pm, a Swift car travelling from Belman side allegedly came at high speed and, while attempting to overtake another vehicle, moved onto the opposite side of the road and collided violently with Prakash’s scooter.

The impact completely damaged the scooter and left Prakash seriously injured. He was initially rushed to the Shirva Community Health Centre and later shifted to a hospital in Manipal for further treatment.

However, he succumbed to his injuries despite treatment.

A case has been registered at the Shirva police station and further investigation is underway.
