Mangalore, Mar 25: “Commercial movies display songs, sex, and romance, but short films are neat and mainly based on some message relevant to the society,” said Sadananda Suvarna, film and theatre director.

He was addressing the gathering at ‘Shooting Stars’ a national-level film-making competition organized by the department of St Aloysius College on Saturday March 24 at Eric Mathias Hall.

“Experiment the medium through short films. Lights, camera, and music play a prominent role. Over the years, let this college turn out to be a platform to inspire students to make good movies for the society,” he wished.

Fr Richard Rego, head, mass communication department, in his presidential address, recalled the year 2006 when the first such festival was started as a forum to showcase the movie-making ability of the students. “Earlier movies made by the students were not known to people. It’s also a place for the students to spend energy meaningfully apart from the usual academic curriculum,” added Fr Rego.

‘I am not alone’ of Fr Muller’s Homeopathy College won the 1st place and ‘Tulunada Garjane’ of St Aloysius College, MCMS student, won the 2nd place in the documentary film category.

In the short film category, ‘Flying Bird’ of St. Aloysius College, and ‘Tiffin Box’ by Maharaja College, Cochin, bagged the first and second place, respectively. ‘Car Festival’ won the special prize in the Konkani short films category.
