Bangalore: Caste-based Religious Leaders Muddy BJP Power Struggle

By V S Karnic

Bangalore, Mar 25 (IANS): An unseemly fallout of the continuing leadership tussle in Karnataka's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the open involvement of several Hindu religious leaders backing their candidates on caste lines .

Over the years caste divisions have deepened in Karnataka, like in many other states in India. Adding to the caste cauldron is the unabashed backing of 'khavi' (saffron colour) clad religious leaders of politicians belonging to their caste. Their participation is, in fact, growing by the day, and noticeably so after BJP came to power for the first time in the state in May 2008.

This trend continues even as one section of Hindu religious leaders themselves is highly critical of heads of various 'maths' (religious institutions) taking sides in political power struggles.

There is no end in sight to this disturbing development in Karnataka despite calls by a section of Hindu religious leaders, civil society groups and other political parties to keep 'khavi' out of politics.

"Shed 'khavi' and wear 'khadi' (or Khaddar worn by many politicians in India) if you want to indulge in politics," is the slogan heard quite often these days in Karnataka, both as an appeal and a dig at the 'saffron-robe clad swamijis".

Karnataka has innumerable 'maths', with not only each caste but each of the several sub-groups in the caste, having its own 'math' and 'swamiji'.

Over the years these swamijis have acquired enormous clout within their caste group as many of them run educational institutions - from kindergarten to post-graduate medical and engineering colleges - and hospitals, either on their own or in tie up with big corporate hospitals.

Most of the leaders of the three main parties in Karnataka - BJP, the Congress and Janata Dal-Secular - are strong believers and often visit various 'maths', even those belonging to other castes, to seek the blessings of the swamiji.

However, swamijis are hitting the streets for and against a political leader. This is a phenomenon affecting the state after BJP, particularly its leader B.S. Yeddyurappa, exploited caste factor to lead the party to power in 2008 and become its first chief minister in southern India.

Yeddyurappa, who has been fighting with BJP national leaders to re-instate him ever since he was forced to quit over corruption charges in July last year, belong to the politically and economically powerful 'Lingayat' caste.

He had termed the failure of JD-S president and former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda and his son H.D. Kumaraswamy to hand over chief ministership to him in 2007 as part of the understanding of the JDS-BJP coalition arrangement, as a 'betrayal' of the Lingayat community.

Deve Gowda is a Vokkaliga.

Lingayats and Vokkaligas constitute 18 and 17 percent of the state's around 61 million population respectively and for long have dominated Karnataka politics.

Ever since Yeddyurappa was forced out, several Lingayat swamijis have led demonstrations and held press meets to demand BJP national leaders "undo the injustice" to him by bringing him back as chief minister.

With Yeddyurappa intensifying his come-back bid, Gowda, as expected in the present day Karnataka politics, is being backed by Vokkaliga swamijis.

BJP national leaders led by party president Nitin Gadkari have bought time to resolve the leadership tussle.

Gadkari and company, while searching for a solution to the Karnataka headache, will serve Hinduism, and also the state. Better if they tell the swamijis backing their local leaders on caste lines to back off from power politics once and for all.

RELIGIOUS leaders should stay away from POLITICS.
Their association with our CHOR POLITICIAN’S makes them loose respect in front of the common man.

The election commission should ban politicians for using religion for vote bank. The commission should ban the party that play with the emotions of the people by playing with their religion. The NGOs & the Task Forces should check the political parties donating public money to the religious organisations for vote bank. Even the religious organisation should not accept black money, cheaters money and looted money, money earned through gambling, prostitutions and bootlegging.

The religious hundies should be accountable for receiving illegal donations from cheats and tax evaders. Tirupati Temple should not have accepted the diamond crowns offered from the Reddy brothers of the Illegal mining loots.

In the name of religion the RSS and its political wing BJP with the help of their sister organisation VHP and BD, comes to power from back doors and that is not democracy.

In the name of religion they destroyed Babri Masjid, killed innocent Muslims is Gujarat and Mumbai, attacked churches in Karnataka and Orissa, attacked minority youths in public places and in the name of moral policing they have the license to openly terrorise the minorities all over India. This should stop and if not, in the days to come there will going to be serious law and order breakdown.
    Jai Hind!

Swamijis, Mulla's n Priests should not interfere in politics. They loose their own respect when the support corrupt politicians. Last time HDK cheated BSY n Swamijis support to BJP is understandable. But now Lingayath swamis support to Yeddy is totally wrong. He is still not cleared of all his corruption charges. Why can't they look for another Lingayath leader like Jagdish Shetter. Why they don't support DVS let him be from Vokkaligas what's the problem? He too is a Hindu, let him complete his term. He is accepted by all cast n communities except  Lingayaths.

Even opposition party's. Mentality of few Swamijis are so much fanatic, they think only Brahmins are Hindus? BJP party will suffer more bcz back ward communities have understood real face n gimmicks of BJP ruled by high class society using lower class only for votes by dividing them and using them to hate minorities when ever election is due.

Unfortunately today most of the mutts are backing the leaders of their caste only to get hefty grants. No mutt should work only for a caste or group they should only work towards betterment of society at large. It is sad that the mutt pontiffs taking sides of persons involved in corruption. Because of these reasons people will lose faith in all the mutts.

This is the real agenda of RSS. BJP is the political arm of RSS. Never ever shall the RSS allow BJP to choose its leader. BJP owes its existance to RSS and without RSS support BJP is a non entity. RSS being dominated by upper caste clouts, RSS wants to meddle in the political policies and governance of India like Chanakya did for Mauryas... In the past, all rulers had a rajapurohit who is from upper caste who used to enjoy extreme powers and who used to advise the rulers.

Now RSS wants its say in all BJP ruled states and BJP govts cant make any policies or any decissions without the consent and approval of their mentor RSS. As long as BJP is there, RSS shall wield enormous influence and RSS is made up of members of upper front who are seers, swamis and clergies.. Whilst RSS dreamt of vedic hindutva, but its political arm BJP failed to get the true message of hindutva rather they went on their own agenda of political hindutva of devision and hate to gain temporarily forgetting that in the long run such political polarisation shall lead to their dismissal and end.

NOw people are fed up of hate and venom that has spread in to our society and the harm it does to once peaceful society...No people want hate or tension in their daily life. What an average Indian looks for is peace, harmony, shelter and basic amenities. Religion becomes secondary. But without religion, no mutt or swami shall survive.

For them for their sustainance they need religion. So a section of upper caste people always advocated on importance of religion to reign in on poor class people. They survival and prosperity depends upon the visits and donations of ignorant devotee who brings and pours his hard earned money to these mutts and swamijis...God is all powerful and He doesnt need any bribe. We can serve God by serving our country men with love and looking after them. We can serve God by serving poor and sick and to serve ones nation or people political clout is not necessary. All dramas.

Veerendra Hegde is the only religious person(of-course he is does not wear Khavi) who is unaffected by politics. He is the real GENTLEMAN.

Few politicians (Janaradhana Poojary, Devegowda etc) tried pulling his legs over few religious practice. But Hegde chose to be silent. Mr. Hegde does not speak much, but he does things. His contribution to education, rural employment generation, social welfare, women welfare, finance management are enormous. The person who became CM and PM could not do this in the state and blames him unnecessarily.

I had respect to Tumkur Siddaganga Swamiji. But not now..

This shows how vernerable these saffron sawmijis are, they do not want the devlopement of the nation, in the name of caste they will ruin everything.Other wise some of the swamijis would have told yeddiyurappa to sit quite for some time and help CM sadananda gowda in devlopeing the karanataka state,By chance if present goverment fails next election will be uphill task for the BJP. better keep these safforon clad swamijis away from the politics.
