‘Tiranga Yatra’ held in Udupi as part of 80th Independence Day celebration

Udupi, Aug 12: Marking India’s 80th Independence Day, a ‘Tiranga Yatra – Patriotic Walk for the Nation’ was held in Manipal on August 12 under the leadership of Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna, with students, members of various organisations and the public taking part.

The Tiranga Yatra was inaugurated with dignitaries releasing balloons into the sky. Prominent personalities from the social, educational and cooperative sectors flagged off the march, which witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, members of various organisations and the public.

Speaking on the occasion, Yashpal Suvarna said, “As part of the 80th Independence Day celebrations, Tiranga Yatras are being organised across the country. In Udupi, we have organised this programme in association with various educational institutions and organisations. This year also marks the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’, written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee as a symbol of national unity. The programme has been organised with the aim of instilling a sense of patriotism and national pride among students.”

Dr Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent, KMC, said, “As we celebrate the 80th Independence Day, the 150th anniversary of the ‘Vande Mataram’ song and the fifth year of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, let us reaffirm our commitment to the nation. With the theme ‘Nation First’, we must all come together to uphold the unity and integrity of the country and work towards its progress and development.”

The yatra commenced from the Canara Bank Regional Office and proceeded through Tiger Circle and Syndicate Circle before concluding near the DC Office.

Dr G S Chandrashekar, Medical Director, Adarsha Hospital Udupi; Jayakar Shetty Indrali, president, Badagabettu Credit Cooperative Society; Ajay Shetty, Ujwal Developers; Kutiyaru Naveen Shetty, president, Udupi District BJP; Prabhakar Poojary, former president, Udupi City Municipal Council, and others were present on the occasion.
