Mangalore, Mar 25:
In a strange incident reported from Permude near Bajpe on Sunday March 25, a well belonging to progressive farmer Gregory Patrao caught fire under mysterious circumstances.

It is learnt that Patrao's family had stopped using the water of this well a week ago as it was contaminated and its colour had turned black. The well is located on his plantation.

Patrao informed the police that he had switched on the kerosene pump in the well at around 9.20 am on Sunday. Within a few minutes fire sparked from the pumpset, and to everybody’s suprise, the fire engulfed the water in the well. It is said that leakage of crude oil from MRPL in the vicinity added oil content to the well water. The fire also spread to trees and other plants around the well. The fire was on till around 3.30 pm, it is said.

The pump set has been completely charred. Surathkal police and MRPL officials rushed to the spot. It is learnt that MRPL officials assured Patrao of taking action.

Foul Play?

However, a press release from MRPL states that the fire was deliberately lit in the MRPL-acquired land. The land had been acquired by MRPL for its phase 3 project. The incident allegedly occurred when someone set fire to the hydrocarbon accumulated on top of the open well located in the land. The source of this fire and how it happened awaits investigation.

The security and fire and safety personnel were not allowed to enter the land and only with police intervention, safety personnel of MRPL could enter and douse the fire, the release stated.

It also added that the land is illegally occupied by Gregory Patrao who has already taken compensation for vacating the land.

"He continues to occupy MRPL land as a trespasser, despite the court orders and the order Issued by the chief minister for his evacuation, based on the report of divisional commissioner from Mysore, M V Jayanti, who conducted a detailed study of his case, including site visit," the release stated.

"In the past MRPL had to relocate the Polypropylene unit which was supposed to come up on the land in question and had planned to put up the tankages required for Phase III project. However, MRPL is unable to proceed with the installation of the tankages, due to continued illegal stay of Patrao family and the same is seriously hampering the upcoming phase III project progress," stated the release.

Why these politicians want to start industry in residential area's. There is lots of land in suburbs. Start industry n power project. This plant is installed in Mangalore so that they can push the waste into the sea. I feel if Patrao had received compensation he would have vacated the land. MRPL covering it's loopholes. Definitely there is some leakage in pipeline or any of storage tanks.

Well said. Agree with your views. In the name of "DEVELOPMENT" - Nature is disappearing. Today we can find many industries, factories moreover countless upcoming land projects... So, In Mangalore we can find scarcity for fresh n cool air. No rain on time and very simple eg: Thumbay dam.

This news gives mainly MRPL's press release version. Not of Patrao's.
MRPL calls him trespasser/illegal occupant. That they have to. Else it is admitted he is legal occupant. He may not be staying there without any reason. May be, he is not fully paid yet or there is an appeal pending in the higher court. Till either of them is not cleared, he got every right to continue on the land. It is his own land. That is how he could stop MRPL's safety/Fire people entering in to his land till the police came.

Why the sentense cant be in this way?....MRPL says Gregory has occupied the land illegally and who lives as a tresspasser in a land belonging to their company. Why MRPL had not taken any legal action against Gregory? If taken, the failure from the same may be the reason and MRPL while having lot of chemical engineers in its hand, why shouldnt have created this disaster to evict the "tresspasser"?

When we were small, we used to go fishing in the Lakes in Permude. There was lot of fish of different variety. Also, the lakes and streams were full of frogs, water snakes, crabs etc. etc. However, after functioning of MRPL, the water has become lifeless. There is not even a single fish, water snake, crab or frog in the whole area. It is very, very sad to view lifeless lakes and streams.

Yes, we want development, but, certainly not at the cost of nature and its beautiful life. With regard to jobs to local people, I suggest the readers to visit MRPL and see how many locals are employed & what job is offered to locals, what language is used in and around MRPL. Unfortunately, our greedy Political leaders are least bothered about the welfare of their own people who voted them.

Sitting far away it is very easy to comment unless true reality is understood. However the following are the comments:
 This May be due to produced industrial water within MRPL needs proper analysis for hydrocarbons, Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) contents and other co-contaminants in the effluents. Degassing to strip out any traces of hydrocarbon or hydrogen sulphide (H2S ) co absorbed may be essential. Nevertheless MRPL takes full responsibility for proper treatment of its effluents before it is are disposed off to the sea in compliance with state environmental regulations.
 Concerned MRPL authorities to check for any foul smelling and H2S levels that may have got trapped inside the well. Care should be taken while anyone trying to enter confined space (well). However if the results are positive MRPL may then have to take action as appropriate to protect other agricultural lands within the vicinity. Currently we read lots of incidents or accidents with MRPL. Long live MRPL with zero LTI since it employees many people directly or indirectly.
 The politics between MRPL and the current asset owner while drawing the above need to be handled as a separate case.

It is not the problem of Mr Patrao's land or not. It will be solved one day. But the land contamination, if it was under MRPL it would have gone un-noticed are put under carpet. Who is responsible for contamination, who will rectify the polution, if it goes on we will be loosing precious land and water. Control MRPL from poluting the land and water.

Its not only MRPL people lost land!!. way back in 1965 people gave up land for NH 17 then NMPT. THen the compensation was aboslutely nothing. THe awareness was nil and media non existent. The people have carried on. Its sad to see people being indifferent. Progress at what cost!! Imagine taking up a project of this magnititude in Mandya!!! Bangalore will burn!! gowda will do Harakiri. DK state of affairs is a political fiasco. Our Elected representatives are power mongers, They really cannot force devlopment for most wanted projects irrespective of their affiliation, Imagine air port expansion, Railway separation, NH expansion, Water supply , It takes ages. List can be endless.Sea wall for preventing erosion, They can pilfer millions for useless projects but not for the most needed.

I had warned long ago about such kind of ground water pollution long ago.We had experienced similar pollution of ground water near Sanath Nagar, Hyderabad. I, as a concerned citizen, demand that MRPL come clean and have transparent waste management policy. I do want to drink water (clean) from my well! if it can't handle safe waste management, then it should downsize to mangeable level.

.We need to support Patrao. In the name of development one cannot order to vacate the land they grew up, fed, and resting place for ancestral spirits.

There is so much of vacant land in and around south canara. Use modern ways to make use of it rarher than making agricultural land to disappear.

    Dear Ganesh Prabhu, Mysore
Patrao is a strong person, an role model for many. He had the courage to fight against FORCED industrialisation.
And for your question, a small counter question- Can we have a MRPL expansion in your house or your property,??? surely your answer is no.
Stop passing loose comments on Patrao. We donot want industrialisation or the development of the country by loosing our houses. If you are ready, you can offer your land for the development of this country.
For God sake stop industrialisation in our fertile, green Karavali.

    Dear Ismail
Cant you just come out of this BJPhobia ? . The whole community supported Patroa during his crisis irrepective of caste & creed or party they supported. It was a very unfortunate incident & I personnely can understand the pain of loosing a cultivating farmland. Even we had vacate from our village for god know what airport expansion as we were atleast 5 Km far fromt he airport and nothing much has happened even thought its been around 15 yeears since we left that place and all we got was peanuts for sacrificing more than 10 acers of land. Now its upto the authorities/MRPL/Centrel Govt or if involved with it the state Govt also how they compensate to Patroa that can bring some relief to the family, & whats gone is gone.
And for your kind information, even if there is a order from a lower court for eviction, forget CM even your oscar award Nominee PM(for acting as PM)cannot do anything but bow for it. He cannot commit or suggest Patroa to defy the court order. If anybody can do something then the parties can go to higher courts thats it. Cant you see what is happengin to Yeddi just because of one PIL, how he has run around courts in between his DVS HATAO-BJP GIRAAVO champaign.? Good lord that you dint blame BJP for that unexpected untimed light showers in Mangalore other day.

"An inch of land of agriculture/ farmer's will not be used for industrialization"in Karnataka is the policy of BJP govt in Karnataka and out gone CM,Yeddy and encumberant CM,DVS, also made it clear to the people of Karnataka.Having said that how come CM himself ordering to vacate?!!

No body including fire and safety personnel permitted to enter the premise but Police personnel's intervention allowed all concerned to enter the premise and douse the fire !! Then how could MRPL says it owns the premise? Is Mr Patrao that big to undermine rule of land?Certainly, confusing statement from MRPL.
