Bengaluru, Aug 14: Parking in Bengaluru could soon become significantly more expensive, with the Karnataka government proposing annual residential parking permits of up to Rs 25,000 and on-street parking charges of up to Rs 80 an hour for cars across the Greater Bengaluru Area.

The Urban Development Department has notified the draft Greater Bengaluru Area (Parking) Rules, 2026, inviting objections and suggestions from the public within 30 days of their publication in the official Gazette on August 11.

Under the proposed rules, annual residential parking permits would be based on vehicle type. Owners of small cars may have to pay Rs 15,000 a year, while sedans would attract an annual fee of Rs 20,000 and SUVs Rs 25,000.

On-street parking to cost more

The draft policy proposes revised charges for on-street parking in commercial and other non-residential areas, with rates linked to road classification. Cars could be charged Rs 40 to Rs 80 an hour, while two-wheelers may have to pay Rs 20 to Rs 40 an hour.

Under the proposed classification, cars would be charged Rs 40 an hour on Category C roads, Rs 60 on Category B roads and Rs 80 on Category A roads. For two-wheelers, the corresponding rates would be Rs 20, Rs 30 and Rs 40 an hour.

The draft rules aim to encourage motorists to use organised off-street parking by keeping its charges comparatively lower. Hourly off-street parking for cars has been proposed at Rs 20 to Rs 40, while two-wheelers would pay between Rs 10 and Rs 20 an hour.

Monthly off-street parking charges are proposed at Rs 1,000 to Rs 4,000. The draft also provides a 50% concession on monthly off-street parking charges for vehicles parked between 8 pm and 8 am.

Longer road parking, higher bill

The proposed pricing structure seeks to discourage prolonged occupation of public parking spaces and encourage motorists to use designated parking facilities.

The draft rules propose progressively higher charges for vehicles parked on roads for more than two hours, making long-duration on-street parking increasingly expensive.

If implemented, the rules could significantly change Bengaluru’s parking landscape by introducing market-linked pricing for public parking spaces and encouraging motorists to shift to organised off-street facilities.

The government has invited members of the public to submit objections and suggestions within 30 days before the rules are finalised.
