Mangalore, Mar 26: At least 15 shops in Bendoorwell area, here have been flooded after a pipeline was damaged early on Monday March 26 at around 4.30 am.

The underground pipeline on the Kankanady-Bendoorwell Road burst, and water gushed out in a flood and flowed into the shops. Localites on the spot dug out a manhole to facilitate easy flow of water into the drains. Mangalore City Corporation officials appeared at the spot in a while to bring the situation under control. But unfortunately, due to a technical snag, the motor to pump the water out was not functioning.

The shop owners and staff were taken by surprise as the water rushed into their establishments. As a result a lot of goods in the shops were damaged.

The damaged pipeline supplies water to Mangaladevi, Mulihithlu, Jeppinamogaru, Nandigudde, and some other places. Hence, these areas will now face a scarcity of water till repairs are carried out.

The road which was asphalted recently, is witnessing such damage for the fifth time. The pipeline under that road was laid four decades ago and is made of cast-iron.

Most locals of the area curse the MCC for poor performance and negligent work. They are also demanding that the old pipeline under the road be shifted or a new one put in to avoid recurrence of such incidents.

When I was MCC Commissioner I had recommended thrice to shift this main pipe to the corner of the road(towards Royal Darbar Hotel)because of the density of traffic. But the Horticulture Dept.never did anything. So why blame MCC or the Corporators ?

Please shift that main pipeline to the corner of the road. The traffic is to heavy, the road vibration is great for that pipe to take the burden.

Nobody will take this advise. The more times it breaks the more times contracts will be awarded for the same job.Lets wait and watch as to when it will break a third or fourth time. After all who's money is it ?

Our city planners are jokers and should be at the Jumbo Circus with the new Mayor !

There was a pipe leaking near Kadri toll gate for over 2 months. Almost all in that locality have complained to the water dept at pump well and Kadri. The concerned dept was not bothered. The same water that was wasted, would have been enough for the whole area for at least 6 months. The commissioner and the mayor should make an enquiry and find out why nothing was done for 2months.

This has happened once earlier.MCC instead of shifting the main water line to the corner of the road preferred to leave it just there. We will not learn from these 2 mistakes. We will get bogged down a third time. The more times it happens, the more time contracts are awarded for the same job.

Lets wait and watch the planning of the MCC.

Will MCC reimburse the loss to these shop keepers ? Who has to be held responsible for such things ? They say its been happenning for the 5th time and its a real shame. What is MCC doing until it was happenning for the 4th time ? Have they got no brains ?

These kind of (SSS)supper suffering scenes are common in India/ Karnataka...This is just an very simple Eg:, No words to express... Non functioning pump shows MCC water supply dept precautionary measure during emergency (it is easy to say technical prob). Hats off for believing "WORK IS WORSHIP"!!!...

People talk about Safety, Health, Diseases etc when they stay in a Foreign Country for few years, because the Foreign Currency talks. Why do not the same people think of the incidents that happen regularly in his Country of Residence even after following all the rules, regulations, policies and procedures than those that do not happen in Mangalore with such a pathetic climate during certain season. My friends when you were in Mangalore you grew up without these rules, regulations, policies and procedures and again when you retire from your Foreign Country and come back home in Mangalore the same Mangaloreans who do not follow the rules, regulations, policies and procedures will come to your help.

this has been happening time and again..MCC comes and does the patch work ....never did MCC think of a permanent solution regarding this.....no planning gefore laying new roads, once road work is compleate MCC wakes up from sleep and digs it to fix the pipes and once done they don even think of doing the finishing touch to make the road ready to be used again....why it is like this all the time ..why MCC playing with public all the time...

Hope this might have happened due surge which has exceeded the pipeline design pressure or due to internal corrosion (since the water flows continuously corrosion factor is ruled out). A sincere request is, replace the piping segment with a spool piece and the road need to be repaired. Appreciate MCC engineering division will take appropriate measures to have inspection of other piping segments (especially at low points) to avoid any future failures as read.

High risk of running business here. MCC need to take immediate action for safeguarding interest of the businesses Someone mentioned to me investing in Mangalore properties and businesses gives great return but poor infrastructure makes me not only nervous but re-think my decisions.
