BJP faces internal ticket tussle in Bardez ahead of 2027 polls

Daijiworld Media Network - Panaji

Panaji, Aug 16: Bardez could emerge as one of the BJP's biggest tests ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections, not because the Opposition has mounted a united challenge, but because the ruling party is increasingly having to manage competing ambitions within its own ranks.

Across Bardez's seven Assembly constituencies, the BJP faces an unusual problem — it has no shortage of political workers, aspiring candidates or established leaders. Instead, the party appears to have too many claimants for several seats.

The challenge for the BJP is therefore not merely to identify candidates capable of winning, but also to prevent those denied tickets from becoming a source of internal dissent.

The issue assumes greater significance as the BJP enters its 15th consecutive year in power in Goa. Fifteen years of uninterrupted rule can create political fatigue, local grievances and anti-incumbency, even when there is no clear wave against the government.

If such sentiments find a political vehicle, internal divisions could make the BJP more vulnerable than a fragmented Opposition might suggest.

Bardez offers a clear picture of this emerging challenge.

Porvorim offers clarity

Porvorim currently appears to be the most settled constituency for the BJP. Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte appears to have a relatively clear path to the party nomination, with no comparable challenger having emerged from within the BJP.

The constituency therefore offers the party leadership something it is struggling to find elsewhere — clarity.

Mapusa faces continuity versus new face

In Mapusa, the competition for political space is more visible. Former customs officer Mayur Sawkar has begun asserting his presence and is openly seeking the BJP ticket, while incumbent MLA and Deputy Speaker Joshua D'Souza continues to maintain his constituency network.

The key question is whether the BJP will prefer continuity with the sitting MLA or believe that projecting a new face would offer a stronger electoral proposition.

Calangute rivalry simmers

The contest in Calangute is equally intriguing. Michael Lobo remains a heavyweight and the sitting MLA, but Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira is also an established political figure.

Sequeira had contested the 2022 Assembly election on the BJP ticket against Lobo, who was then a Congress candidate. Although political alignments have changed significantly since then, the underlying local equations may not have disappeared completely.

Mandrekar challenges Siolim status quo

Siolim presents perhaps the clearest example of an incumbent facing competition from an established party figure.

Delilah Lobo is the sitting MLA, but former minister and three-time former BJP MLA Dayanand Mandrekar has made his intention to contest known.

Given Mandrekar's long political history in the constituency, his challenge cannot simply be viewed as another aspirant seeking attention or a party ticket.

Parulekar eyes Saligao comeback

In Saligao, sitting MLA Kedar Naik could find himself sharing political space with former minister Dilip Parulekar, who has indicated his desire to return to electoral politics.

Parulekar brings an established organisation and a history of representing the constituency. His recent public mobilisation has further fuelled speculation about his political plans.

Aldona weighs experience against new face

Aldona presents a different challenge. The BJP needs to defeat sitting Congress MLA, but the bigger question is who the party will field.

Former MLA Glen Ticlo's appointment to the National Commission for Minorities has revived speculation about his political future, while other local aspirants are also positioning themselves.

For the BJP, Aldona could become a test of whether it chooses experience, organisational loyalty or a fresh face.

Tivim remains unsettled

In Tivim, Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar has the advantage of incumbency. However, competing political ambitions have also emerged in the constituency.

The emergence of alternative claimants, including those with links to senior BJP circles, suggests that even ministerial status may not automatically settle the question of candidature.

The developments across Bardez point to a larger question for the BJP — whether its organisational strength and abundance of leaders could eventually turn into a weakness.

Fifteen years of uninterrupted BJP-led rule has also created the possibility of accumulated anti-incumbency, even if that sentiment has not yet translated into a united Opposition challenge.

For the Opposition, the immediate task will be to turn its fragmentation into a credible electoral alternative.

For the BJP, however, the more immediate challenge could come after the tickets are distributed — keeping ambitious leaders within the party fold and preventing rebellion.

Political observer Adv Mahesh Rane summed up the situation by saying, “There is no need for the Opposition to defeat BJP; BJP will defeat BJP.”

While the remark may appear exaggerated at this stage, the growing number of serious claimants across Bardez's constituencies makes it a warning the BJP cannot afford to ignore.
