Mangalore: Severe Water Crisis to Hit City in Nine Days

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SK)

Mangalore, Mar 26: Deputy speaker of legislative assembly Yogish Bhat has warned of a severe water crisis in the city, if it does not rain in the next nine days.

Addressing a press meet here on Sunday March 25, he said that it is estimated that water in the Thumbay dam is sufficient only for nine more days.

He said that drinking water crisis will be severe this time. "Last year there was water up to 12 ft and 3 in, but this time it is only 8 ft and 10 in. In the previous year water level had reduced by 2 inches. But this year due to several reasons water level is reducing by 4 inches. Inflow of water is also constrained by 50% , he said.

He said that a meeting with officials and discussions on the same have been conducted. Private use of water in AMR and MRPL dams will be stopped and water will be provided for the city. Bhat also said that suggestions have been made to immediately stop water supply to factories.

"Factories have been asked to cooperate, and people should also cooperate by not wasting water. Importance should be given to drinking water. To supplement water needs, 200 bore wells in the city will be used to supply water. Tank water facility will be provided to areas that face severe shortage," he said.

Yogish Bhat asked the people to offer prayers so that it would rain soon.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, deputy mayor Amitakala and others were present.

Usually at this time the water level in the dam would be 12 ft, but this time due to scorching summer and shortage of summer rains, the level has decreased drastically. If it does not rain in Subramanya and Ghat areas severe drought will be faced in the city.

As much as 160 MLD water is being used daily from the Thumbay dam. In 24 hours, 18 MLD water is supplied through a pipeline. As per law, water usuage per person is limited to 135 litre. But here, more than 200 litre is being used. Public have been urged not to waste water and use it discreetly.

There is a saying in Konkani, (Aab moronk nozo, daando zoronk nozo!." Did the decision makers even think of the water demand before giving permisssions (and taking bribe) to monstrous residential complexes? Where did the behemoth MRPL suck the water from? It is already trying to pollute the underground water so precious for the common man.

This is a missed call from the God.. to wake up and open eyes.

Stop the blame game. You people are responsible for the governments at the center and state.

BJP ruled the state and corporation. what have they done to find a solution? it is the Mayors prime responsibility to take care of the City. And the mayor should have had the courage to fight with State Govt., instead of finding ways to please the ministers...

Wake up for the missed call before its too late....

The main cause is improper town planning by the corporation. We need to have to plan to cope up with raising population.Next year we will continue to face the same untill we make some concrete plan inorder to solve the issue like Educating youth and Publizising in the media abt the water conservation otherwise we will not have water for our own usage.

May be it will become like Middleast wherein We have to pay for Water more than Oil.No use of Blaming Gov's coz ultimatly they all are same. BJP or Congress they can do this much only untill people realise their own responsibilities towards nature and enviornment.Mr nagesh nayak talks like a Propoganada channel for Bjp all the time.... Time has come for him to read some world news and climate change reports..

Only 9 more days of water and the summer has just set in? So much for the infrastructure of this much hyped so called fastest growing city in India! The basic infrastructure of water and electricity is extremely deficient for the burgeoning population. Only way out is drilling more bore wells, but this too is not a long term solution as it has been proven that the water table gets depleted overtime leading to severe water crisis. How true, just a couple of days ago there was a research report from a US university that by 2022 wars will be fought for water and this should send the alarm bells ringing for the planners and politicians!!! Investors should consider all these factors before investing in flats at sky high rates!!!

There is no scientific management of water. There is lot of wastage in transportation, storage and usage. Everyone thinks about himself. No one cares for nature or the environment. This cannot go on for long. Children should be taught at an early age on efficient and economical use of water considering our future generations. Adults have to be more responsible in using water whether it is free of charge or one has to pay for it.

Too much water is wasted by people these days. Washing cars with pipes/hoses, excessive watering of gardens, too many swimming pools, uncontrolled/unproductive use of water in bathrooms and so on. This has to be monitored.

The population of Mangalore has multiplied in recent years. Too many flats have come up and too many people have moved to Mangalore. Just imagine in a villa and compound meant for one family, now there are 100 families living in the flats on the same land. No one has thought of or planned for increased demand for water supply.

Mr. nagesh Nayak, stop your crap, There is non congress govt in Karnataka since 2005, does it take 7 yrs. to decide, formulate and implement plans for water conservation......or are your MLA's too busy watching porn, doing illegal minning, involved in land scams, dodging the lokayukta, MLAS raping friends wife etc.... there seems to be no time to make decisions regarding people who vote them to power. As mangalore is a coastal city receiving the second highest rainfall in the country. its ironic the city is to be faced with such eventuality. i fail to understand the situation in bellary, Bijapur, Bangalore and other interior places of the state which receive much less rainfall than mangalore.

At least now on govt should think of conserving water. Until now only money spent on study of saving water! High and dry time to implement it! As Prakash Inna suggests...govt should invest on desalination plant using sea water. They should also go for sewage treatment plants to feed water to the gardens and greenery.

I think the first priority to stop usage of corporation water by the construction business. So the MCC have to check on them, if they are using corporation waterlines and stop them immediately, because every building construction is assured licence only if there is facility of borewell.

Government is charging for the drinking water supplied to citizens but companies are using this scarce resource without paying a penny. BJP is known to shout from top of their voices when it comes issues like coal but what about giving water free to industries. Does this not amount to loss of revenue to government? People of Mangalore should suffer from famine to understand the importance of water. Then only they will wake up from their sleep and put pressure on these political leaders.
