Mangalore: Water Crisis - Mayor Inspects Vented Dam, Blames Shortage of Rain

Mangalore, Mar 26:
A day after deputy speaker Yogish Bhat expressed his concern over shortage of water in vented dam after it came down to 8.10 feet, mayor Gulzar Banu on Monday March 26 inspected the dam and said that the reason for the shortage of water is natural as it had not rained in catchments areas.

She assured that water supply to industries will be stopped and priority will be given for drinking water to cater to the needs of citizens in city corporation limits.

Former mayor Shashidhar Hegde said that water supply to MRPL and MCF will be stalled. To a query on AMR power project using excessive water, he said the issue will be brought to the notice of the deputy commissioner through the MCC commissioner. He further said it was lack of inflow of water that caused shortage of water.

MCC commissioner Harish Kumar said that precautionary measures to save water may involve cutting of water supply in the future. He hoped that timely rain in two weeks time will solve the problem.

Contrary to Yogish Bhat’s statement that water in the dam is enough only for nine days, the MCC commissioner said that there will be no problem in potable water supply for another 45 days. He called upon the citizens to use water discreetly and avoid wasting it.

Measures have also been taken to pump back the water drained due to usual leakage in the dam from one side to another.

On the pipeline that burst in Bendorewell on Monday morning, Linge Gowda, assistant executive engineer of MCC said that it was a 600 mm AC cement pipe which was placed 25 years ago. "The pipe burst due to the pressure caused by road widening work," he said.

Water level on March 26 in previous years was follows (in ft):

1993 - 12.8
1994 - 12.6
1995 - 12.8
1996 - 12.4
1997 - 13
1998 - 12.7
1999 - 12.9
2000 - 12.1
2001 - 11.3
2002 - 11.5
2003 - 9.9
2004 - 8.11
2005 - 9.9
2006 - 13
2007 - 13
2008 - 12.3
2009 - 13
2010 - 11.8
2011 - 12

Dear Vincent Mangalore, digging bore wells at random is not a long term solution to the water crisis as has been experienced in Maharastra where strict regulations have been put in place now! The water table recedes and there is permanent drying up of perineal water streams. Only solution is rain water harvesting, curtailing usage of water! Any which way, this scarcity of water in the beginning of summer should get the alarm bells ringing on the future of this city!!!!

There are many ways to get drinking water, why depending rain water only. Dig borewells, create lake you will get 100% sure water. For example Mr. Narendra Modi how he did it? there are no water falls and many rivers in Gujarat. I am not saying to follow up Gujarat. But our government can create own ideas, planning project, etc.

    Whatever the happenings in MCC
Mayor election held recently wherein the minority Congress Corporator Mrs.Gulzar Bhanu unanimously elected as Mayor, the supportive role palyed/being played by Congress Corporator Sri Shashidhar Hegde is noteworthy. He being a ex-Mayor has been very active in MCC's business meeting always. He is really a people friendly man. Here also he will be great source of knowledge/support for Bhanu in discharging her Mayor duties.
Believe me, he can be a MP candidate for Congres from Mangalore for 2014 general elections. He has that calibre.

Sreekesh UAE very good suggestion, but who will scarify for this. Means if you have a land of 10 acres and govt want takeover to store water. Do you happily willing to give your land or any other valuable resources it meant to you. There will be lots of objections for that. By the time the projects start my children also may be not there.

Dinesh Poojary my darling please study the nature and also the population & high rise buildings. The water level on the earth is gone down now comparing 1993. This because of no trees on the earth. because of that the water is drained quickly on the earth. For this please don't blame any Govt & person. Blame yourself as you want posh life style. You need posh flat to stay in city for that you will destroy the nature. Please understand, please don't comment blindly.

I suggest that 2 vented dams be built across the Pavanje River, another across the Gurpur River (upstream). Moreover I have noticed that there is no water harvesting implemented in Mangalore.Hundreds of Apartment & Commercial buildings have sprung up in Mangalore over the past decade. The surrounding areas o the compound have either been tarred or concretised.Hence the rain water does'nt get into the ground depleting the ground water table. This is a great worry for the future of Mangalore.Officials too do not bother / care to check while granting Occupancy certificate for the buildings.

Mangalore is going to suffer with acute water shortages in the coming years and with Wells going dry.

Time to consider going in for building a Desalinated Water Plant in Mangalore? It will be difficult to find the large amount of money required to fund the project though. A few years back, Sydney was threatened with a severe water shortage as the local dams continued running low for a long time, and the NSW State Government built a desalination plant, at a huge cost to the tax payers though.

While the dam levels are presently running at the satisfactory levels thanks to the recent heavy rains, the desalination plant is serving as a standby in case of emergency. I think the Gulf countries as also Singapore depend upon the desalinated water supply in view of the scarcity of natural supplies there.

As our planet is warming year after year, there will going to be a serious water scarce in the near future? The authority should foresee the water requirement for the next 20 years and plan accordingly.
The Govt with the Central Govt aid should dig many deep canals along both sides of the river as well as more mini-dams at each deep-canal region to trap & divert the sea-ward flowing water during rainy season.
All the natural lakes and tanks in the region should be widened, cleaned and deepened to store more water that will re-charge the ground water. Severe water shortage in the near future is a very serious issue and the authorities and the public should not take it lightly.
    Jai Hind!

When will Rain water harvesting become mandatory! I cant believe with the amount of rainfall we get (approx. 300 cm of rain) we have shortage of water. Look at Tedindia for a talk by Anupam Mishra and decide http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/anupam_mishra_the_ancient_ingenuity_of_water_harvesting.html

Not previous, mayour, but all the mayors since last 20 years and his team, the planning committe, the commisioner, people's representitives, local MLA's MP's all are supposed to be blamed for this situation. British laid drainage system still exisit in & working in Bombay, but in Mangalore officials term 25 years old drainage pipes couldnt handle the infrastructure work pressure and burst near Bendore. the reason for this shortage is giving residential water to commercial purposes, also recycled water of drainage should be given for mrpl, mcf and for construction purposes.the flats and apartments are digging borewells and using ground water so the water level has gone down.be it bjp, congress or any other party only one motto when u eat we will be silent when u eat we will be silent.surprising that mayor banu has blamed nature giving a silly reason to escape then providing a permanent solution to this problem.

Look at the Levels of water from 1993. The inflow or water level remained same through out but am sure population or total consumption must have doubled now from then. MCC all these while busy eating under the table and throwing blames on each another for any crisis. Problems faced by taxpayers, well thats not of any value nowadays.
