Udupi, Aug 20: Adarsha Hospital, Udupi, organized a massive voluntary blood donation camp at the hospital on August 20 in association with the Udupi District Hospital Blood Bank Unit, HDFC Bank main branch Udupi, SDPI Udupi, Udupi Basava Committee and All India Veerashaiva Lingayat Mahasabha, Udupi district.

The camp was inaugurated by the dignitaries by traditionally lighting the lamp.

Dr G S Chandrashekar, medical director Adarsha Hospital, welcomed the gathering and in his introductory note said, “Udupi district has only one blood bank, the District Hospital Blood Bank Unit at Ajjarkad, which has been serving the people for over 12 years. During emergencies, the unit provides blood to patients, and we largely depend on it as there is no other blood bank facility available in the district.”

Dr Veena, chief medical officer of blood bank unit district hospital, said, “Adarsha Hospital started a new blood storage unit six months ago. The District Blood Bank Unit functions as the mother blood bank and supports several government and private blood storage centres. Licensed storage units can collect and store red blood cells in bulk and provide them to patients.

Since Adarsha Hospital has a higher number of admissions and consequently greater blood requirements, maintaining an adequate blood stock is essential. Udupi district has a strong culture of voluntary blood donation, with numerous health camps being organized regularly, so there is good support from blood donors.”

Mohammed Ashraf Bava, president SDPI Udupi constituency, said, “Blood donation is one of the greatest acts of service. A single blood donation can help save a life. If we voluntarily come forward to donate blood whenever there is a need, we can ensure that patients receive timely treatment and help prevent blood shortages.”

Vimala Chandrashekar, CEO Adarsha Hospital Udupi; Vishnumoorthi Padubidri, general manager HDFC main branch Udupi; Prakash Sajjan, president All India Veerashaiva Lingayat Mahasabha Udupi District, and others were present on the occasion.
