Udupi, Aug 20: Udupi District Working Journalists’ Association (UDWJA) celebrated World Photography Day in association with Udupi Press Club Committee, with news photography exhibition at Udupi Press Club on August 19

Satyabodha Joshi, professor of practice at Manipal Institute of Communication inaugurating the news photograph exhibition, said, “Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the greatest knowledge source of the present era. It teaches us humility, and we must embrace it. Although AI may currently appear to be a challenge for the field of photography, there is no doubt that if we overcome its limitations, it can become an opportunity.”

Satyabodha Joshi said that emerging technologies in photography bring new responsibilities. AI, which has recently emerged as a major technological development, is also challenging photographers to learn new skills. “If AI moves 10 steps ahead, we will have to move 100 steps ahead. This is the challenge before us. If AI is used appropriately, its advantages are numerous,” he said.

Satyabodha Joshi noted that the technology and infrastructure behind AI involve huge investments and could become increasingly expensive as the technology advances. “Regardless of what kind of technology emerges, what matters is how we use it. Only what we acquire through consistent practice can remain strong and sustainable. This applies particularly to the field of photography,” he added.

Bharath Kumar, director of public relations, media and social media at MAHE, who inaugurated the program, said photography is the process of stopping the wheel of time for a moment and preserving it. “Although times have changed and new technologies have emerged, the fundamental principle of photography has not changed. Photography is essentially the process of bringing something from darkness into light,” he said.

Bharath Kumar pointed out that both photography and journalism have professional codes of ethics. “Human beings have the ability to think about what should and should not be done, machines do not possess this ability. Therefore, those who use technology must strictly adhere to professional ethics,” he said.

Satyabodha Joshi also delivered a talk on ‘Photography amid digital technology and AI’.

District president of the UDWJA Subrahmanya G Kurya presided over the programme.

District general secretary Nazir Polya welcomed the gathering. State Committee member Astro Mohan delivered the introductory remarks. District Committee member Chetan Matapady compered the programme, while Ajith Aradi proposed the vote of thanks.
