Beltangady, Aug 22: After nearly nine years on the run, a warrant accused wanted in connection with a 2016 case registered at Punjalakatte police station has been arrested in Chikkamagaluru.

The accused, Shabeer, a resident of Mudigere in Chikkamagaluru district, had allegedly failed to appear before the competent court for the proceedings and remained absconding for around nine years.

Shabeer was wanted in Punjalakatte police station Crime No. 156/2016, registered under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 42, 42 and 44 of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act (MMRD Act).

Acting on the warrant, a team from Punjalakatte police station traced Shabeer to Chikkamagaluru and arrested him. The team comprised head constable 1023 Rajesh, constables Cholappa Sanshi and Nagaraj.

Following his arrest, Shabeer was produced before the competent court on August 22. The court subsequently remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody.

The arrest brings to an end the accused's prolonged period of absconding in the case, which dates back to 2016.
