Ayodhya, Aug 24: A political controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh after fish was reportedly served at a political welcome event in Ayodhya during the holy month of Sawan, drawing objections from religious seers and political opponents.

The serving of non-vegetarian food at a public political function in the temple city has triggered a debate over religious traditions, cultural sensitivities and individual dietary rights.

Religious leaders and opponents criticised the organisers, describing the decision to serve fish during Sawan in Ayodhya as disrespectful to local religious sentiments.

The organisers, however, defended the meal, saying that fish is consumed during Sawan as part of the dietary traditions followed by certain communities. They also maintained that food choices are an individual's constitutional right.

Opponents said they were not questioning people's private dietary choices. However, they argued that serving fish at a public political programme in Ayodhya during Sawan was insensitive to the religious sentiments associated with the holy period.

The controversy has brought renewed attention to the balance between individual constitutional freedoms and sensitivity towards local religious and cultural traditions.

The issue has also sparked a wider political debate in Uttar Pradesh over how political events should be conducted in places of major religious significance, particularly during auspicious periods.
