Post-Quake Homes Start to Crack

Beijing, Mar 27 (IANS): Houses built and donated to Chinese homeless earthquake victims after their homes were damaged by a deadly quake are already falling apart, China Daily reported Tuesday.

A total of 392 properties, built within months of the 5.7 magnitude quake in Ruichang city in 2005, have developed cracks, leaking roofs and other problems, the report said.

The earthquake quake caused seven deaths, more than 300 injuries and left more than 100,000 houses damaged.

The local government's response to the quake was to build new homes for the victims in six months so that they move in on the first anniversary of the quake.

But since 2009, nearly 400 households have reported problems, 300 within one week, the daily said.
