Hyderabad, Sep 1: Telangana BJP state president N Ramchander Rao was placed under house arrest on Tuesday, preventing him from travelling to Nalgonda to meet BJP district president Nagam Varshith Reddy, whose residence was reportedly ransacked a day earlier.

The BJP strongly condemned the police action and accused the Congress-led Telangana government of attempting to restrict Opposition leaders from meeting party workers and raising issues concerning them.

Rao said this was the second time in a week that he had been placed under house arrest. He claimed that he was earlier prevented from meeting students who were protesting over their demands.

According to Rao, he planned to visit Reddy’s residence and meet his injured mother following the reported attack, but police stopped him from travelling to Nalgonda.

“Democracy is being systematically crushed in Telangana. Twice within a week, the Congress government has placed me under house arrest—first to prevent me from meeting protesting students, and now to stop me from meeting our Nalgonda District President, whose house was ransacked by Congress goons,” Rao said.

Speaking to report, Rao described the action as his second house arrest in three days and said he remained determined to travel to Nalgonda despite the restrictions.

The BJP has alleged that Congress workers were responsible for the reported vandalism at Reddy’s residence. The allegation comes amid growing political tensions between the ruling Congress and the BJP in Telangana.

Rao accused the Congress government of adopting double standards on democracy and constitutional values, alleging that police restrictions were being used to prevent Opposition leaders from meeting students, party workers and people affected by political incidents.

“The Congress speaks about protecting the Constitution, but its government is using police restrictions to prevent the Opposition from standing with students, party workers and victims of political attacks,” he said.

The BJP leader further alleged that the restrictions were aimed at preventing him from discharging his responsibilities as the state party president.

The house arrest comes against the backdrop of the reported attack on the Nalgonda BJP chief’s residence. The BJP has criticised the police action and accused the Congress government of misusing administrative machinery against political opponents.

The allegations have added to the ongoing political confrontation between the Congress and BJP in Telangana.
