Mumbai, Sep 4: Thirty-eight people, including four crew members, were safely rescued after a ferry broke down around 1.5 nautical miles from the Gateway of India on Thursday evening.

According to Colaba police, the ferry Anwari, which operates 30-minute harbour cruises from the Gateway of India, developed a technical problem around 8.30 pm after a rope became entangled in its propeller. There were 34 passengers and four crew members on board.

After receiving an alert from the crew, police personnel at the Gateway of India beat chowki began coordinating the rescue operation. They found that another ferry, Azad Hind, was operating nearby and contacted its owner, Junaid Mulla.

The Azad Hind was diverted towards the stranded ferry and rescued all 38 people. They were brought safely to Jetty No. 2 at the Gateway of India at around 9.10 pm.

Police said they will question the crew of Anwari to determine the circumstances that led to the ferry’s breakdown.
