Melbourne, Sep 6: The Melbourne Konkan Community (MKC) celebrated a historic and memorable Monthi Fest this year, drawing a record-breaking crowd of over 800 attendees, the largest gathering in the association's history. The move to a larger venue proved to be a resounding success, allowing the growing community to come together in greater numbers to celebrate the nativity of Mother Mary, one of the most cherished feasts of the Mangalorean Catholic community.
The celebrations began with a solemn holy Mass celebrated by Fr Prakash Menezes, Fr Jacob Alvares and Fr Alfred D’Souza, whose presence added great spiritual significance to the occasion. The traditional blessing of the new harvest and the veneration of Mother Mary with the showering of flowers brought alive the rich customs and deep faith that make Monthi Fest so special. Families united in prayer and thanksgiving, seeking Mother Mary's intercession for their homes and loved ones.
The spirit of community was evident throughout the day as children, youth, adults and families took to the stage to present a wide range of cultural performances. The programme showcased not only the remarkable talent within the community but also the strength of the bonds that unite generations of Melbourne Konkans. The performances reflected the values of faith, culture, service and togetherness that continue to define MKC.
Adding to the festive atmosphere was the outstanding music provided by the band, which kept the crowd entertained and energized throughout the celebrations. Baila was at the heart of it all, with the dance floor coming alive as young and old joined together in celebration. The enthusiasm was infectious, and the calls for "one more" echoed throughout the venue, making it one of the highlights of the day.
As always, the traditional feast added to the joy of the occasion, with families and friends gathering around tables to share food, fellowship and laughter. The meal served as a reminder that Monthi Fest is not only a religious celebration but also a cherished occasion that strengthens community ties and preserves Mangalorean heritage for future generations.
A special milestone during this year's celebration was the launch of the MKC Theme Song, a unique project that captures the spirit and identity of the Melbourne Konkans community. The song was recorded in Mangaluru and brought to life through the dedicated efforts of Stephen D'Souza and Valerian Menezes from Melbourne, together with Shilpa Cutinha from Mangaluru, whose contributions were instrumental in making the project a reality.
MKC extend their heartfelt gratitude to all sponsors whose generosity helped make the event a tremendous success. Special appreciation is extended to supporters from the UAE, including Martin Aranha, Godwin Vas, Girish Venugopal, Edwin D'Mello and Naveen Lasrado, whose continued support of the community from overseas is deeply valued.
The association also acknowledges the tireless efforts of the choir, whose uplifting singing enhanced the liturgical celebrations, as well as the numerous volunteers, performers and families who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Their dedication and commitment embody the true spirit of service that lies at the heart of Monthi Fest.
A special word of thanks is extended to the MKC Committee led by president Maxim Rego, and to their families, whose support, sacrifice and encouragement throughout the year made this landmark celebration possible.
As another successful Monthi Fest comes to a close, the overwhelming participation and spirit of togetherness serve as a powerful reminder of what makes the Melbourne Konkans community so special.
