Lucknow, Sep 14: The Uttar Pradesh government is planning a five-fold expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in the state as it seeks to accelerate clean mobility and strengthen its renewable energy ecosystem.
Uttar Pradesh currently has around 238 operational public EV charging facilities, mainly located along major highways, expressways and industrial corridors. The state Energy Department is now targeting the addition of around 1,000 new EV charging points, according to a report.
The expansion is being supported by incentives under the Uttar Pradesh Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy 2022. Under the policy, charging service providers investing a minimum of Rs 25 lakh in a charging station are eligible for a one-time capital subsidy of 20%, subject to a maximum of Rs 10 lakh per unit for the first 2,000 charging stations.
The policy also provides a 20% capital subsidy, up to Rs 5 lakh per unit, for the first 1,000 battery-swapping stations, with a minimum investment of Rs 15 lakh. The government has further proposed making land available to government and private entities on a revenue-sharing model at Re 1 per kWh for 10 years.
Uttar Pradesh Additional Chief Secretary, Energy, Ashish Kumar Goel described the state as a significant force in India's renewable energy landscape, backed by a policy framework covering solar energy, bioenergy, green hydrogen and electric mobility.
"With the ongoing expansion of the Green Energy Corridor, UP is well positioned to support the next phase of clean energy growth," he said.
The state has an installed renewable energy capacity of 8,906 MW, including 6,024 MW of solar power, according to the information provided.
Around 1.77 million electric vehicles have been registered in Uttar Pradesh as of August 15, 2026, according to data cited from the VAHAN database. E-rickshaws account for a substantial share of the state's EV fleet, with nearly 1.15 million registered.
The growing number of e-rickshaws, electric two-wheelers, electric four-wheelers and other electric vehicles has increased the need for a wider and more reliable charging network. Officials believe expanded charging infrastructure will make it easier for EV users to access charging facilities during long-distance travel and help boost public confidence in electric mobility.
The state's push comes amid a broader national expansion of charging infrastructure. According to the Union Power Ministry, India had 29,277 public EV charging stations as of August 1, 2025, while Uttar Pradesh was among the states with a significant number of such facilities.
Meanwhile, the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo (BRE Summit) 2026 is scheduled to be held from November 2 to 5 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, alongside the 9th Session of the International Solar Alliance Assembly and the 4th International Conference on Green Hydrogen. The summit is aimed at bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, investors and other stakeholders to promote investment, innovation and collaboration in clean energy.
