Bangalore: Call Against Corruption - Posters at Govt Offices to Counter Bribery

Daijworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Mar 30: Even as Anna Hazare and his team of crusaders are busy with their demand for a Jan Lokpal Bill, a Bangalore-based NGO is doing its own bit to eradicate or at least control the evil of corruption in the city.

The volunteers of Janaagraha will take forward the movement against corruption with a practical, simple and yet unique approach - by sticking anti-bribery posters in around 300 goverment offices across the state capital.

The posters, under the 'posters lagao corruption hatao' campaign are aimed to dissuade people from bribing government officials, and have been pasted at BBMP, BWSSB and land registration offices on a trial basis.

The campaign was approved recently by chief secretary S V Ranganath, after much pesuasion and deliberation by the volunteers.

The poster campaign is the brainchild of Subrahmanyam Ivatury, who joined the NGO less than a year back.

Janaagraha is already at the forefront of the anti-corruption movement in the city through its unique online initiative 'ipaidabribe', where people from across the nation can narrate how they were either forced to pay bribe or stood up against corrupt officials.

The site has already recieved a whopping 15,584 complaints of bribery from 478 cities across India. The total amount of bribe paid by these people amounts to an astonishing Rs 43,47,79,364. One can only imagine the bribe paid by the rest of India who have not shared their stories on the website yet.

'ipaidabribe' site has not only stories of collecting or paying bribes, but even of those upright, honest officials who do not indulge in corruption. One can also report the good works done by the government.

The poster to be put up in government offices will have a mobile number to which one can SMS an incident of bribery. The first phase of the campaign will cover government offices, and in a few weeks' time will be extended to police stations, as nearly 6,000 complaints on 'ipaidabribe' website deals with bribery among policemen.

Interestingly, a survey called 'Market price of corruption' done by 'ipaidabribe' has revealed that Bangaloreans top the list of bribe payers, having offered a staggering Rs 11.35 crore as bribe during the survey period. Delhi and Mumbai pale in comparison, with the bribe amounting to Rs 4.8 crore and Rs 4.5 crore respectively.

This only makes bribe expensive. The bribe taker will increase his rate, he has to handle the issue indirectly, appoint touts so number of middle men increases. Now people will not know how much is the worth of bribe, can he bargain and negotiate. It would be better if they display the rate for each and every service. To file FIR Rs. ...., property registration Rs. , traffic violation, Rs. Pension avail Rs ... Water connection, Rs ... pass bill rs.... etc. transfer Rs ..., etc., etc., "Fixed rate, no bargain"

I think this STOP CORRUPTION posters should be put in front and back of Anna and his team of so called crusaders and all the corrupt officials. I think whoever whoever approved of this poster is the most corrupt person and he should put that poster STOP CORRUPTION IN FRONT OF HIS CHEST AND ONE BEHIND HIS ASS. Please do not fool with this kind of gimmick.Show some results and put some sensible posters and prove to the citizens of Karnataka and the whole of India.

Banners just could light up awareness but could not stop corruption. Rising voluntary Anti-Corruption wings required at Municipal levels. Our youths should contribute more into this.

Posters are not intended really for public, but to the inspecting squads only. As an example, in Society Registration Office, last year with umpteen difficulty and also after shelling some bucks only, a renewal of Society regn.was possible. This year[2011-12] the same Society aut hority, even after visiting the Office for a couple of times, renewal was not possible. I heard the same story from another Society also. They simply do not work, that's all.

yes indeed I do agree with Mr.Vivek Baliga,Bangalore/Abhohar.This corruption cancer is every nook and corner not only in and outside office.Even in our day today life it is there starting from auto, grocery, malls, shops etc.who is free from corruption.Nobody is so sincere, everybody wants to become overnight millionaire that too at the cost of common people.Talking big big things and from behind doing something else/stabbing.However above campaign/awareness is a good sign and good move.Complete eradication of corruption is some what difficult task in country like India. However I pray for the best.At least somebody is taking/evincing interest in this regard.I am morally/physically,mentally support them.God bless them.good move.

Besides corruption, the Govt. has introduced unnecessary & aditional paper work to get your job done.

e.g.: Form 11B This is incase you want to register your agricultural land. This new proceedure takes 2-3 months and one has to run from pillar to post.Likewise tere are many other. We cannot blame the DC for this .The rule is made in Bangalore overnight. This may not be practical for erstwhile South Kanara dist.as the topography of the land is different.

Corrupt officials certainly, not amusing by such slogans.important thing is once caught red on camera, they should not reinstated until and unless proved innocent. However, under present system such thing will not happens so corruptions in departments are flourishing.Good initiative, and those anti corruption crusaders need to support to educate the mass.

    Statistics give a horrific 'narration'
Tentacles indeed have spread of 'corruption'
Effects of posters of 'Stop Corruption'
Should also be assessed for 'Vindication'
If this too does not stem the rot..
Then nothing is left for 'Imagination'!!
