Chandauli, Oct 4: A B.Sc Nursing student who was allegedly running a private hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Chandauli district was arrested after he allegedly performed surgery on a woman in the absence of a doctor, following which she died, police said.
The incident occurred at Indra Hospital in Mahraiya village under Dhanapur police station. The hospital's registration has since been cancelled, while the health department has recommended sealing the facility following an investigation by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO).
Suman, a resident of Lakhaiypur village under Dheena police station, was admitted to the hospital on August 18 for a uterus-related operation. According to police, hospital manager Indrajeet Prajapati, 24, usually arranged for doctors to visit the facility on call for treatment and surgeries.

However, when no doctor arrived on August 19, the day Suman was scheduled for surgery, Prajapati allegedly performed the operation himself.
Suman's condition deteriorated after the procedure and she died later that night.
Following her death, her family approached Dhanapur police and lodged a complaint. Police subsequently sought an investigation by the CMO.
The medical inquiry allegedly found Prajapati responsible for medical negligence. According to police, the investigation found that a wrong blood vessel was cut during the operation and Suman's kidney was damaged, resulting in her death.
The inquiry also found that no doctor or paramedical staff was present at the hospital and that Prajapati was admitting and treating patients himself.
Police said the CMO's investigation established that Prajapati was a B.Sc Nursing student and did not possess any degree or diploma that qualified him to practise medicine.
Originally from Raipur Babhniav village in Dhanapur, Prajapati had been operating the private facility in Mahraiya under the name Indra Hospital. Locals reportedly knew him as a doctor, while he generally called doctors to the hospital when required.
During questioning, Prajapati allegedly told police that he was the hospital manager and normally called doctors to treat patients. He allegedly admitted that when no doctor arrived on the day of the incident, he performed the operation himself, after which the woman died.
Based on the CMO's report and the complaint filed by Suman's father Chandravali Bind, police registered a case at Dhanapur police station under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to culpable homicide, and arrested Prajapati. He was subsequently sent to jail.
The health department has cancelled the registration of Indra Hospital and recommended that the facility be sealed. Further investigation is underway.
