Mangalore, Apr 1: Three persons have been arrested in connection with the theft that took place at Sunkadakatte near here on March 27 at the house of Saroja.

The arrested are Chetan of Padu Peraru, Krishna Bilayi and Bachu Mandal, a native of Bengal. All the stolen valuables have been seized. They were produced before the media at a press meet here on Sunday April 1, convened by city police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh.

It may be recalled that the thieves had gained entry into Saroja's house in her absence and looted gold and other valuables worth Rs 10 lac. What made the case sensational, apart from the fact that it took place in broad daylight, was that the thieves first tied up Geeta, Saroja's niece, before ransacking the place.

Addressing reporters, Seemanth Kumar said, “This was a sensational case, and unprecendented as such an incident has never happened before. It took place in daylight in a residential area”.

He also congratulated the police personnel involved in the investigation on cracking the case. He also thanked Vishakapatnam police, Pandeshwar circle inspector Tilak Chandra, Bajpe SI Dinakar Shetty, SI Ananth Murudeshwar and his team and all others who were responsible for solving the case.

Chethan, the main accused, is a local against whom several cases have been lodged. His two accomplices are from West Bengal.

Saroja Salian handed over Rs 25,000 as a reward to Dinakar Shetty and his team and Rs 2,000 to the special branch constable.

I suppose the utter poverty, lack of employment opportunities and desperate efforts to survive and sustain themselves would have driven the culprits to commit such robbery and unlawful activity. This is especially so because they were the migrant labours from outside the State who would have found even more difficult to find a job to sustain themselves due to the local language problem. The public exposure and display of the wealth by the victim`s family would have been noticed by these culprits which would have been tempted to commit such theft. While their unlawful action cannot and should not be condoned in any case, it would be wise for the people not to display too much wealth and their valued belongings in public so that they do not fall prey to such robberies. In the modern times, all the avenues and facilities are available to safely store their money and wealth in the Banks, and one should make use of them as much as possible. By the way, I would like to congratulate the Mangalore Police force on their swift action in catching the culprits.

I wish the thieves will be paraded throughout Mangalore without any masks and their pictures will be posted in every nook and corner of the city. Good pictures by SPOORTHI ULLAL

It was reported in Daiji that( on march27)thieves were speaking in Malayalam according to victim. Most of the readers were bombarding Malayalis. Now truth has come out.Thieves were not Malayalis but Bengalis...If police had investigated as per victim's report, then innocent poor malayali would have been behind bars.Thank you and Congrats to Police Dept for solving this case in a very short time with perfection.

The victim is really lucky for not being murdered.

By the way, Padu Peraru and Sunkadakatte are very close. That means, the local hero(villain) knew every movement of the family. Is there something more to this story?

Congrats to the Mangalore Police to have gotten hold of the culprits so fast! This incident proves that locals are the masterminds who take advantage of poor and marginalized immigrants by brainwashing them and get them involved in crime! But, one more lesson for all, please do not keep too much gold and cash in the house , however much security you have got! It is a risk even to life of the inhabitants!!! Professional gangs are on the prowl!!!

Unessasarily Keralite people were blamed, we should not point out a finger at, one unless you are absolutely sure. It is very easy to deframe one but to gain that respect it will take a lot of time. Just imagine for a theft in Kerala, witness saying theives were speaking in Tulu how much it will hurt us. Everyone was blaming the Keralites as if they knew them from their birth. I dont say they are all saint's, there are some coackroaches among them but there are a few decent also.
