Jaipur, Oct 19: Two inmates lodged at an open jail facility in Rajasthan’s Barmer district were killed in a horrific road accident on Monday near Navle ki Chakki on Jaisalmer Road, which passes through Barmer city.

The car in which they were travelling reportedly went out of control after hitting a dead animal on the highway. It broke through the divider railing and collided head-on with an oncoming dumper truck.

The impact was so severe that the front portion of the car was completely crushed, trapping both occupants inside the wreckage. Bystanders made strenuous efforts to rescue them by removing parts of the damaged vehicle before rushing them to a hospital. However, doctors declared both men dead on arrival.

Following information about the accident, a team from the RIICO police station reached the spot and began collecting details.

According to RIICO police, the deceased were identified as Mahendra, son of Ranaram, and Sujaram, son of Dharmaram. Both were residents of Deva village in Jaisalmer district.

Their bodies have been kept in the mortuary of the government hospital, where post-mortem examinations will be conducted. Police have registered an incident report and launched an investigation.

Preliminary assessments suggest that poor visibility due to darkness may have contributed to the accident.

Both men were inmates at the open jail facility of Barmer District Prison and were serving sentences for murder. Mahendra had been staying at the facility since 2019, while Sujaram had been there since 2025. Mahendra was living at the facility with his wife.

On Monday morning, both men had marked their attendance in the jail administration’s register before leaving for work. By evening, however, both had lost their lives in the crash on Jaisalmer Road.

According to eyewitnesses, the front of the car was badly mangled in the collision, leaving the occupants trapped inside. Bystanders attempted to rescue them by removing the car door and metal panels to reach the men.

After being pulled from the wreckage, the two were rushed to a hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead.

A crowd gathered at the accident site as news of the crash spread. Police inspected the scene and initiated an investigation to establish the exact circumstances that led to the collision.
