Yemenis fear escalation after deadly camp attack

Yemen, Oct 20: At least 50 people were killed and more than 200 injured in a Houthi missile attack on Monday, raising fears of a further escalation of the conflict in Yemen.

Three ballistic missiles struck what the Yemeni government described as a training camp for newly recruited security personnel in Shabwa province. The government said the camp was not linked to any frontline fighting and condemned the strike as a “terrorist” attack.

The Houthi movement, also known as Ansar Allah, offered a different account, claiming that it had targeted gatherings of Saudi-backed forces. The group also claimed that Saudi officers were among those killed and warned Yemenis to stay away from such camps.

The Houthis have indicated that further attacks are likely. Their military spokesperson said the group would continue launching missile strikes deep inside Saudi Arabia.

As cross-border attacks intensify, civilians are increasingly concerned that the conflict could spread closer to their homes. Both sides have threatened further escalation, while Saudi Arabia has stepped up its air campaign.

The latest attack has heightened fears of a wider confrontation, with the potential for further casualties and increased insecurity across the region.
