Mangalore: District Social Welfare Officer Arun Furtado Expresses Confidence in Konkani

Mangalore, Apr 3: “Several regional languages are facing threatened oblivion in 50 years owing to globalization.  Although Konkani is also facing the threat, its well on the way to sustenance, and this has been assessed by the Konkani teachers who have gathered in large numbers on the occasion.  Meanwhile, I will have no doubt that Konkani will reach its glory with the efforts of dedicated Konkani teachers,” said Arun Furtado, Dakshina Kannada district social welfare officer.

He was the chief guest speaking during ‘Konkani Studies and Analysis–2012’ programme that was organized under the aegis of Konkani Prachar Sanchalan, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, and Mandd Sobhann on Tuesday April 3.

Meanwhile, ‘Top Konkani Teacher Award’ instituted by Mandd Sobhann in memory of the late Jessy Castelino was presented to Jalashi D’Souza, Konkani teacher of St Philomena School, Kemman, Udupi.  The award comprised cash money of Rs 5,000, citation letter, and public honour.

Konkani Prachar Sanchalan has been organizing this programme every year for Konkani teachers in recognition of their service, besides paying perks to them out of the contributions donated by Konkani enthusiasts. The state government has not enrolled Konkani teachers on its payroll since Konkani studies are in the beginning stages.  It is for the first time that 60 SSLC students from six schools are appearing for Konkani exams, which they opted for as third language, on Friday April 13.

Konkani Prachar Sanchalan president Roy Castelino, in his introductory address, explained the mission of sustenance of Konkani through study in schools and also sought support for future plans.

Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy president Kasargod Chinna felicitated Konkani teachers teaching Class X students on the same occasion.  He also extended support from the Academy for the sustenance of Konkani.

Mandd Sobhann Gurkar Eric Ozario and Academy registrar Dr Devdas Pai were present on the dais.

Konkani Prachar Sanchalan executive secretary Vitori Karkal compered the programme.  Sheldon Crasta proposed the vote of thanks.

    The most effective way to preserve and sustain Konkani is to encourage children of English medium schools speak the language in their homes. Well to do English educated parents should instill in their children the feeling that Konkani is also a language with rich history and literature like any other Indian language and that they should not be ashamed to speak in their homes and outside.
