Media students train in photography, lighting and cinematography at industry workshop

Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 31: The Bachelor's in Media and Creative Technology is a degree awarded by St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), with Sierra Learning Academy facilitating the program's industry-embedded learning sessions. As part of this initiative, BSc Media and Creative Technology students took part in a hands-on photoshoot and cinematography workshop held on October 30 at Spotlight Dance Studio, Yeyyadi.

Thirteen students attended the session, which covered camera technical terms, studio lighting techniques, photography equipment, and video production terminology used on a professional shoot.

Led by an industry photographer and cinematographer

The session for BSc Media and Creative Technology students was conducted by Rahul Shetty, a professional photographer and cinematographer with Storyfy, who led a live, end-to-end demonstration covering photography terms for beginners, camera settings, and cinematography basics.

Representatives from Sierra Learning Academy, including Deepith Kundar, head of the department, and lecturer Abdul, were present throughout, as the session moved between theory and practical demonstration so students could see each concept applied in real time.

Technical terms and equipment covered

The session walked students through the vocabulary and tools used on a real photoshoot set, including:

  • Camera settings: Aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, depth of field, white balance
  • Lighting setup: Key light, fill light, back light, reflectors, diffusers, soft boxes
  • Equipment: Tripods, lens types, lighting stands, studio backdrops
  • Editing and post-production: Color grading, retouching, exposure correction, photo editing terms
  • On-set terms: Framing, composition, posing, angles, directing a model

Hands-on practice on set

After the demonstration, the students were divided into three groups for a live photoshoot with a professional model, Sherlin Dalmeida, each group working out its own choice of angles, lighting, and framing. This hands-on round turned the morning's photography and lighting terminology into applied skill, and each group's photographs were reviewed and evaluated afterward.

About the programme

An industry embedded BSc Media and Creative Technology Program

This workshop is part of a series of industry-embedded program sessions that Sierra Learning Academy facilitates for BSc Media and Creative Technology students at St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), bringing working professionals from photography, cinematography, and digital media production into direct contact with students before they graduate. This structure sets the programme apart from most degree courses in Mangaluru, which tend to stay largely classroom- and exam-based: students here get regular live field visits, on-location shoots, and practical, industry-facing sessions built into the course itself.

For students considering a BSc in Media and Creative Technology, or aspiring photographers and cinematographers exploring a media and creative technology course in Mangalore, sessions like this reflect what the program is built around: real industry exposure rather than classroom theory alone.

From camera handling and studio lighting to on-set direction and post-production, students get a working introduction to the skills a career in photography, videography, and digital media actually requires.
