Mangaluru, Oct 30: Carrying forward its distinctive promise, “Indian at Heart, Global in Healthcare,” Indiana Hospital & Heart Institute, Mangaluru, has emerged as a leading destination for advanced, accessible and compassionate healthcare. The hospital serves patients from across coastal and Malnad Karnataka and neighboring regions of North Kerala. Strategically located at the convergence of three National Highways, this NABH-accredited institution combines convenient accessibility with comprehensive tertiary care.
With a capacity of 300 beds, advanced medical infrastructure and state-of-the-art technology, Indiana Hospital provides specialised and multidisciplinary care across a wide spectrum of medical and surgical disciplines.

Offering advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities across more than 25 specialty and super-specialty departments, the hospital has established itself as a comprehensive healthcare destination under one roof. It is recognised for its Centres of Excellence in cardiology, pediatrics, neurology and cancer care. Its NABH- and NNF-accredited 3A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides specialised care for newborns, including premature and critically ill infants. The hospital’s NABH Nursing Excellence accreditation further reflects its commitment to quality, patient safety and compassionate nursing care.
At the heart of advanced cardiac care
Cardiology remains one of Indiana Hospital’s key areas of clinical excellence, supported by advanced cardiovascular and cardiothoracic services. The department provides specialised care for complex coronary artery disease, structural heart conditions and patients requiring minimally invasive cardiac interventions.
Indiana Hospital has pioneered several structural heart programmes and achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first centre in Mangaluru to successfully perform valve-in-valve Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedures. This minimally invasive treatment offers an important option for eligible patients whose previously implanted bioprosthetic aortic valves have deteriorated.
Further strengthening its expertise in complex interventional cardiology, the hospital has performed more than 300 image-guided Left Main Coronary Artery (LMCA) bifurcation Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) procedures over the past five years.
Continuing its commitment to innovation, Indiana Hospital introduced laser angioplasty, becoming the first hospital in Karnataka’s coastal districts to offer this advanced procedure. Under the leadership of Dr Yusuf A Kumble, managing director and chief interventional cardiologist, the hospital has successfully performed more than 200 laser angioplasty procedures within a relatively short period.
In another significant milestone for Coastal Karnataka, the hospital’s cardiac team implanted an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled leadless pacemaker in an elderly woman. This technology represents an important advancement in cardiac rhythm management, offering an alternative to conventional pacemaker systems for appropriately selected patients.
Minimally invasive cardiac interventions form an increasingly important part of Indiana Hospital’s cardiac treatment programme. The department offers a comprehensive range of interventional and surgical cardiac procedures for patients across age groups, from newborns to senior citizens. Its specialised services include pediatric interventional cardiology, supported by the expertise of the region’s first pediatric interventional cardiologist.
Together, these capabilities reflect Indiana Hospital’s commitment to bringing advanced cardiac treatments closer to patients across the region.
A vision rooted in excellence and compassion
Indiana Hospital was founded by the renowned Kumble brothers, Dr Yusuf A Kumble and Prof Dr Ali Kumble, chairman and head of pediatrics. Their vision was to establish a healthcare institution that combines global medical standards and advanced technology with compassionate, accessible and patient-centered care.
Over the years, the institution has continued to expand its clinical capabilities while remaining committed to its founding philosophy of delivering quality healthcare to the communities it serves.
Advancing medical education and training
Beyond clinical services, Indiana Hospital has made significant contributions to medical education and professional development. The institution serves as a training centre for DNB specialty and super-specialty programmes, including DNB Cardiology. It also conducts National Neonatology Forum (NNF) Fellowship programmes in Neonatology for eligible doctors and nurses.
The Indiana Group of Institutions further advances this educational mission through programmes in nursing, allied health sciences and physiotherapy, contributing to the development of skilled healthcare professionals.
Extending healthcare beyond Mangaluru
Recognising the importance of accessible specialised care, Indiana Hospital continues to extend its reach beyond Mangaluru through its healthcare network. Its presence in Hassan, Chitradurga, Kasaragod and Thalassery reflects its broader objective of bringing quality healthcare closer to communities that need it.
These facilities support the institution’s vision of improving access to medical expertise and strengthening regional healthcare delivery.
A new chapter in organ transplantation
Indiana Hospital has entered a new phase of advanced medical care with the launch of the Indiana Transplant Centre. Approved for liver, heart and kidney transplantation, the centre aims to provide specialised treatment for patients with end-stage organ failure.
Supported by advanced infrastructure and multidisciplinary clinical expertise, the transplant programme represents an important expansion of the hospital’s tertiary-care services. It reinforces Indiana Hospital’s commitment to offering complex, life-saving treatments closer to home and reducing the need for patients to travel to distant centres for specialised care.
Upcoming plans: Expanding the healthcare network
With a growing healthcare network and a clear vision to extend advanced medical services to underserved regions, Indiana Hospital is pursuing an ambitious expansion strategy across North Kerala and Malnad Karnataka. The proposed developments include 200-bed multi-specialty hospitals in Kannur and Kanhangad in Kerala, a 150-bed hospital in Chitradurga and a 75-bed hospital in Hassan.
These planned facilities are expected to expand access to specialised consultations, advanced diagnostics, medical and surgical treatments, and comprehensive multidisciplinary care. They will also contribute to regional healthcare development and create new employment opportunities.
As Indiana Hospital & Heart Institute continues to expand its clinical capabilities, educational initiatives and geographical presence, it remains guided by its founding commitment: to combine international standards of medical care with the compassion, accessibility and personal attention patients deserve.
