Kanpur, Nov 8: A 55-year-old scooter rider was killed after a speeding Mahindra Thar, allegedly driven by a woman learning to drive, rammed into him in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur on Saturday night. Following the collision, the SUV went out of control, smashed through the boundary walls of two adjoining properties and finally came to a halt in a garden.

The victim, identified as Santosh Singh Chauhan, was returning home with a saree for his wife when the accident occurred barely 500 metres from his residence. He had left home around 7.30 pm, telling his family that he would return shortly. However, his family soon received the news of his death.

According to eyewitnesses, two women and a man were travelling in the Thar, with one of the women behind the wheel. Santosh died on the spot. The SUV first crashed through the boundary wall of a house belonging to Professor Kailash Chauhan before breaking through the wall of an adjoining property owned by GST Superintendent Anita Mahadevan, who is posted in Bengaluru.

Professor Kailash Chauhan rushed outside after hearing the loud crash and reportedly saw two women and a man inside the SUV. The occupants allegedly abandoned the damaged vehicle and fled in another car that arrived at the scene shortly after the accident.

Police traced the registered owner of the SUV through its number plate. Preliminary information suggests that the vehicle belongs to Krishna Kumar, whose registered address is in Panka Bahadur Nagar, Panki.

A case has been registered in connection with the accident. Police are examining CCTV footage from nearby cameras to identify the occupants and trace the car in which they allegedly fled. Investigators are also recording eyewitness statements and verifying details obtained from the vehicle’s registered owner.
