Mangalore, Apr 8:
Sujata, 28-year-old woman died of severe bleeding after delivering her baby at K S Hegde Hospital here on Sunday April 7. She had a normal delivery, but developed complications later and passed away.

Sujata's husband Suresh and the family have blamed the hospital and the doctor who treated her of negligence and failure to provide information to the family on her condition.

In a complaint to Ullal police, Suresh stated that Sujata was admitted to K S Hegde hospital in Derlakatta on Thursday April 5, and she had a normal delivery at 2.45 pm on Saturday April 7. It was her first pregnancy and she gave birth to a healthy girl.

However, she later suffered from severe bleeding, and doctors opted to remove her uterus.

Suresh stated that at around 6 pm, when the family inquired about her health and that of the baby, the doctors allegedly refused to provide any information. Later, whem Suresh along with two other close relatives entered the ICU and touched Sujata, they felt her to be unresponsive and motionless. Her death was revealed to the family by the doctor only at around 9 pm, the complaint stated.

Suresh in his statement to the police alleged that the negligence of the doctor in treating his wife caused her death. He also sought action against the hospital.

A case has been registered in Ullal police station.

Hospital's version

When Daijiworld contacted the hospital, a doctor who did not want to be named said that till the time of delivery Sujata's condition was normal. She had postpartum haemorrhage which could not be brought under control. The doctor added that bleeding could not be controlled due to ‘various’ reasons.

"The uterus contraction procedure that happens in any normal delivery did not happen with her, and though blood was given, bleeding continued. As a last resort hysterectomy was conducted at 5 pm. However, unforeseen complications caused her death," he said.

About Suresh’s complaint that doctors refused to give information about his wife’s condition, he said that sometimes doctors could be busy treating the patient, and they cannot speak to the relatives every time they enquire about the patient’s condition. He assured that the doctors had done their best to save Sujata's life.

So many comments blaming the doctors. Let them institute an enquiry before passing so many comments. Remember we should not judge others till the truth comes out.

It is hard to believe that Sujata who was just 28 years old died after a normal delivery. It is all due to the Doctor's negligence and the hospital should be responsible for the unfortunate death.Suresh, my heartfelt condolences to you and your family members. I feel sorry for the child as she will be without a mother. May Sujata's soul rest in eternal peace.

Bleeding after delivery is not uncommon. most of the time problems occur because of a condition called DIC (searcg google for more) after delivery wherein blood does nt clot.it s very dangerous and needs immediate attention and detection,it needs either radiological intervention or hysterectomy.no doctor wud like to see his patient dying. whatever comments are made commercialisation etc are their personal views and does not apply to all doctors. maternal mortality in india is still around 150 per 100,000 live births which means in india one new mother dies every eight minutes.april 11 th is safe motherhood day and efforts are on to reduce maternal mortality.

May her soul rest in peace.God give the courage to her Husband bear this pain at this moment & take care of the new born. Hospitals are turned down commercial place these days not only in India, anywhere in the world. In India for the NRI Families, admitting their patient to hospitals means purchasing one way ticket as I have experienced & proved both my Parents who lost their lives some years ago 2 of the famous hospitals in Mangalore without returning home to see their children.

Dr.Sujay..Thanks for information & comment.Myself and my wife were victims of doctor's negligence(or innocense). We lost a healthy baby boy 10 years back. My heart still says it is doctor's mistake. But we were forced to accept the destiny that time. Here,in this case I have a strong doubt about Doctors performance.Poor husaband will accept destiny..no other option unless he files a case..Can he afford to go to court..?

Mr. Harsha Malothra, when you feel the pain personaly then only you can understand it. I am not blaming you or your point of view, you may be right in 10 - 25 % cases.
I worked in a hospital for 5 years, there are no human values , its just money , buisiness.
Also i know the limit of negligence....Just praying to God to give Courage and Strength to the family

Medical negligence is a very serious offence. May Almighty bestow peace to this great soul & strength to family members in this moment of grief. So sad they should give police complaint against that doctor. Next time he may never going to do such MISTAKE.

There are certain issues which are to be investigated...
    1. Being a Sunday, that too Sunday afternoon whether any senior doctors were available?
    2. If death is due to excess bleeding why was she not transfused blood?
    3. Its doctors duty to inform the patients' condition even when it is deteriorating and patients party to be taken into confidence. They should be given a chance to take the patient to some other place for better care if they desire so.
Hope the hospital authorities do a honest enquiry so that these incidences are not repeated. I am sure Mr Vinay Hegde, being a honest gentleman, truly like his brother Justice Santhosh Hegde will do justice to the poor patient's party. Just imagine the baby which became mother-less on the very day of its birth,
    I am really sorry.

it is very unusal in modern medical care for a lady to die after normal delivery because of bleeding There must be some negligence in this for sure Under monitored conditions in a medical college if a pateint were to die I feel there MUST BE NEGLIGENCE HERE and the culprits behind this must be brought to justice and no woman should die like this again

I've noticed in the recent past that in such topics, most of the readers comment against doctors in a very negative derogative manner.
I'd like to remind the readers that a doctor doesn't become one overnite.
Its very cheap when people comment on the wealth a doctor accumulates. No one talks of the effort and hardwork he goes through the beginning stages of his career, which is definetely one of the toughest course.
Death is in the hands of the almighty and in most cases the doctors do give their maximum to save lives. That does not mean one shud expect his doctors to be nxt to his patient 24x7.

And dear readers, if u still have no respect for a doc, then i challenge u to try getting up on an alarm ring at 3am in the nite. I'm sure u wudn't even take the effort to snooze the alarm, but a doctor(specially an obstetrician) wud rush to the hospital before u wud realise.

OMG!Its very sad news,HOW CAN THE DOCTOR SAY THAT "DOCTORS COULD BE BUSY TREATING THE PATIENT,AND THEY CANNOT SPEAK" THEN WHY THE HOSPITAL ADMITTED HER, IF THERE ARE NO SUFFICENT DOCTORS? SOME DOCTORS BEHAVE LIKE AS IF THEY ARE FALLEN DIRECTLY FROM THE HEAVEN,THE DOCTOR SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS INCIDENT AND HOSPITAL SHOULD SPONSER THE BABY.
