Mangalore: City to Get Water from Kudremukh's Lakya Dam

Mangalore: City to Get Water from Kudremukh's Lakya Dam

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Apr 10: The proposal to draw water from Lakya dam built by Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd for meeting the needs of the city, which was hanging fire since long, seems to be moving on the right direction. At a meeting held at the office of the district commissioner here on Monday April 9, it was decided to seek diversion of one MGD of water on a daily basis from the dam for drinking water purposes.

The above dam had been built for pumping iron ore mined at Kudremukh mountains through a pipeline, after mixing it with water, to the pelletization plant of the company functioning at Panambur, by using gravitational force. After its lease expired, the company has not been conducting mining activity at Kudremukh, and hence, the dam built by it has become useless, but for meeting limited water needs of the company at Panambur.

The meeting was convened specifically to discuss the issue threadbare and arrive at a decision, in view of the dwindling water resources in the city. The meeting was attended among others, by deputy speaker in the state assembly, N Yogish Bhat, deputy commissioner, Dr N S Channappa Gowda, officials of the city corporation, as well as some officials of Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd.

The district administration officially requested the company to release one MGD of water at present, to meet water needs of the city. This water will be drawn by interlinking the company’s pipeline to the water treatment plant of the city from Panambur. At present, 2.3 MGD of water is being supplied to the company’s unit at Panambur every day. The meeting also discussed the practicability of bringing 6 MGD of water from Lakya dam every day to the city, by making full use of the pipeline capacity. However, this might take time, as court permission and other procedures may be needed to be followed for the same.

In the meanwhile, moderate rainfall being received in the catchment areas of River Netravati since a couple of days, has given rise to a hope that water situation woes will not become grimmer during the remaining period before the onset of monsoon.

    It is shocking that our administration was sleeping till now when the population of Mgluru might have gone up by more than 10x with absolutely no increase in water infrastructure!! This is good news that Mangluru inhabitants ultimately will get supply from the Lakhya dam, but this measure has to clear red tape and bureaucratic barriers!! Still this is not the solution for the ever burgeoning population of Mangalore. Strict guidelines of rain water harvesting and community storage should be enforced with immediate effect.

    Also, as directed by the Govt. of Maharastra recently that all builders should be asked to give a detailed plan on how they are going to ensure water supply to the residents of their completed projects!! Unless these draconian steps are taking immediately, we will be in for tough times more so if the monsoons were to fail!!!

    @Bhandarkar
    He he...very funny sir...But the fact about the dam being collapsed or original not being existing is not true at all..there was a crack found in one of the walls of the dam probably in the early 90's and that was when it was given a few touch ups and the height of the dam was also increased at that point of time itself..the original dam that was built in 1976 itself still exists sir..the same old one..it neither collapsed nor a new one was built..

    Tauseefji
    I am referring to the 'Dam'.
    Bina 'Dam' ke ek baar collapse hua tha woh... if my memory serves me right. The original, beautiful dam is certainly not there anymore!
    Agree with you that the water there might be Amrit.....However here in DK district 'Amrit' is served regularly at some places day in and day out to many who believe it to be so with some mix! At fixed prices though!

    @Vijay,
    Thank you for agreeing with my words sir..
    @R.Bhandarkar,
    Ji sir...Lakya is actually the name of a small stream that ultimately gets connected to Bhadra river.You can call it a tributary...The dam was built across this tributary and thats how it gets the name lakya dam...The water i would say is one of the purest forms of water there coming down from the shola forests of the western ghats..I would again repeat my words its nothing less than amrit...

    Its a great news, Kudremukh is a catchment area, and now the mining activities have ceased. But does the pipeline that carried iron-ore be suitable to supply potable water, does it need to be treated? i was born and lived in kudremukh for 30years and i can assure you the water there was really good. i agree with Tauseef, i see some people disagree with him. Strange.

    Water will always remain to be a most precious commodity in a country such as India where the national population is growing by more than 15 million people each year.

    Every kind of plan and precaution taken in preservation of water, accumulation of water and treatment of water will prove to be beneficial not only to Mangalore and Karnataka but also, if required, to other neighbouring States. The larger the pipelines planned for transmission and distribution of water. and larger the treatment plants will benefit the country as a whole because if there is surplus availability of water could always be sold at a reasonable price to the neighbouring public for deomestic or even for irrigation purpose.

    Climate change can always bring drastic results to any State in India, and if one State has any surplus water in the pipelines or in the reservoirs, that surplus water can always be beneficial to any kind of utilization within or outside the State of Karnataka.

    The Israelis have the best technology on water conservation, distribution and utilization. Their hyonic system of irrigation is an admirable fact that India always can solicit for the benefit of our ever-growing population.

    MCD will wait till wipe out of last of water from Mangalore so that they can start Water Tanker Business by introducing their own Water Tanks giving on hire basis to MCD. If they are serious about solving water crisis, they would have taken some water storage measures long back.

    They even can instruct the builders to erect “Rain Water Harvest” method to fulfill the water consumption of new buildings. This is what happening when you uneducated Corporators due to reservation system to rule MCD and they do not have any foresightedness to think positive for the development of most upcoming and fast growing city like Mangalore
