Udupi, Apr 12: The police of the town police station here succeeded in arresting two persons, who are accused of killing a labourer working in transport sector named Basavantappa alias Manav. Basavantappa from Badami was murdered at his rented home at Katte Vadiraja Acharya Road in Kunjibettu here on Sunday April 8 night, and the murder had come to light the next day.
The arrested accused have been identified as Prahushankarappa Bhangigowda (40), residing at Hosur in Haveri district, and Parvin Toppo (23) from Chiroteli village, Jharkhand. They were arrested from the town. These two persons, who had run away from their families, used to eke out a living by doing petty jobs in and around the town since some time.
It is said that both the accused were friends of Basavantappa, and had consumed food and liquor in the company of the latter on Sunday night. Later, both of them, it is gathered, used a screw driver to stab Basavantappa in the chest and kicked him till he died, before decamping. After finding Basavantappa’s body in a pool of blood the next day, Shaukat, owner of a local transport firm, had informed the police.
The accused told the police that Parvin had borrowed Rs 5,000 from Basavantappa, and the latter used to repeatedly pester him to repay the loan. Parvin grew angry, as Basavantappa used to deride him in front of others for non-repayment of the loan. When drunk, there used to be minor quarrels between Prabhushankarappa and Basavantappa. This was the background for the murder, the police said.
