Dubai: NRIs Should Get Provision to Vote Online - J P Hegde

Dubai, Apr 19: Recently-elected MP representing Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency, K Jayaprakash Hegde, who is on a short visit to Dubai, urged NRIs to initiate a campaign for their rights to vote through the internet.

“It is apparent that every NRI cannot be expected to travel to his hometown just to caste his or her vote. In my opinion, in such a scenario, exercising franchise through secured technology via the internet would be the best alternative,” he said, speaking at a programme organized by Praveen Shetty of Fortune Group of Hotels to felicitate him on behalf of over 50 organizations from all over UAE. The felicitation was organized at Lotus Boutique Hotel on the evening of Wednesday April 18.

“Daijiworld.com is a very effective e-media. It is a highly popular web portal among the Kannadigas. Daijiworld can take a lead in initiating this campaign. We will put in our best efforts to pursue the issue with the government and provide impetus to this campaign till the NRIs get the right to vote from their places of work,” Hegde said.

'Expectations Galore, Constraint of Time'

“As I got elected through bypoll, I have only two years of term as MP. At least the last six months of every MP's term needs to be wholly dedicated towards preparing for the next election.  In the remaining 18 months available to me, I will do everything within my command to address the problems of the people in my region. I am aware that the electorate has high expectations from me, and I will not let them down," said J P Hegde.

He further said, "I am under constant pressure from my own party workers who want me to attend victory celebrations and thanksgiving meetings, but I have politely declined this demand, duly asking them to go ahead and celebrate in my absence. If I begin to yield to these requests, the remaining term of my office will not be sufficient. I have begun visiting remote and far-flung areas of my constituency. In spite of time constraints, I could not turn down the invitation extended to me from my well-wishers in Dubai, as a large number of people from my constituency live here. I am here to attend ‘Chammana’ programme being organized by Bearys Forum on Friday April 20,” he said, while acknowledging the honour conferred on him for coming out victorious in the election.

Praveen Shetty draped a shawl around the visiting dignitary. Sudhir Shetty and Shekhar Shetty handed over a citation to him, while Raj Shetty presented a memento. Before this, Ganesh Rai read out the citation.

Hegde recounted that he had begun his political carrier by joining Janata Dal in 1985. With the support of his people, he said he won the election for the first time and became a minister in 1994. “After the Janata Dal was divided, I kept my distance from political parties, and started to fight election as an independent candidate. The people also elected me twice as an independent candidate,” he recalled.

He said that he had to choose to join Congress party, after areas within his home constituency got trifurcated between different constituencies. “I continue to work for the people, and try to address their problems. I serve them not to win elections, but because of an inner urge to serve people,” he said.

Hegde regretted about casteism prevalent in the political system and elections in India. He urged the people here to convey a strong message back home to keep caste away from politics. “It is okay to use the name of one’s caste in wedding and family functions, but in elections, caste, creed, religion etc should never be a factor,” he felt.

'Election Campaign Began through Daijiworld'

In his address, Jayaprakash Hegde made an interesting revelation. He said that for both the Congress and BJP, the real election campaign had begun through Daijiworld, even before the official announcement was made about the bypoll for Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency.

“Daijiworld rightly predicted some three months in advance, about the likely allotment of tickets by the Congress to me and by BJP to Sunil Kumar. I have been watching reactions from the people, both good and bad, about me. The comments of the people helped me to make preparations for the fight by the time election approached. These factors helped a lot in getting the ticket and in making preparations for the election,” he explained.

He thanked Daijiworld in a special way, for creating political awareness through e-media. He also recollected that a Daijiworld reader in Kuwait had returned to his hometown for casting vote on the polling day!

“NRIs are also an integral part of India. They also should get voting rights. Polling through postal ballots or embassy may not yield cent percent result. Voting online appears to be the best option, and a number of nations are already following this system,” Hegde added.

Mangalore ‘International’ Airport and Air India Express

UAE Exchange COO, Sudhir Shetty, who was also present at the programme, informed the audience that he had met Mangalore Airport director, and had learnt from him that DGCA officials have cleared all the formalities for giving international status to Mangalore airport.

“Now it is only a matter of time before a formal announcement is made by the central government. Only after this announcement is made, will other airlines be able to fly to Mangalore,” he explained. He was giving this information in reply to a question posed to Hegde about granting international status to Mangalore airport.

Sudhir Shetty also expressed his concern to the MP about the poor service provided by Air India Express, particularly relating to delays in scheduled flights and high fare during peak seasons.

Sarvotham Shetty, who compered the programme, urged Hegde to streamline Air India Express’s functioning, duly complaining that the airline does not seem to have any policies about fixing of air fare. “This airline makes a three-fold increase in air fare during June-July and December. How can it be called a budget airline?” he questioned.

Hegde promised to look into this issue immediately after returning to India.

Lotus Boutique Inauguration

Earlier in the day, Jayaprakash Hegde inaugurated ‘Lotus Boutique’ Hotel, run under Fortune Group headed by Praveen Shetty. The inaugural was conducted by lighting the lamp and cutting the ribbon.

Hegde, who wished every success to the group of hotels, also recalled about his association with Praveen Shetty in the past, and how Shetty had helped him to win his first election in 1994 with his active campaigning. He also hailed Shetty for his services to the people of Kundapur region back home.

Beary Forum president, Dr Yusuf, Ramee Group chairman, Raj Shetty, Praveen Shetty and his wife, Jayaprakash Hedge and his wife, Shobha Shetty, were present on the dais during the felicitation programme.

Praveen Shetty welcomed the gathering. Sarvotham Shetty presented the programme, interspersing it with wit and humour.

The event concluded with dinner.

It is argues that the Indians in Gulf countries should not be referred as NRIs. Rather, they should be called Indian contract workers in Gulf countries. The working and living conditions of Indian workers in Gulf countries are far different from NRIs living in other countries.
Revealing another shocking trend of money-lending by these hawala rackets, the loan sharks operating in the Gulf countries, who lend money to the labourers in Gulf countries on the higher rates of interest. The lenders pay the money to dependent in India through their agents and it is collected back in the Gulf, in foreign currency. The money has to be returned in the agreed period, until then the interest should be paid regularly.
The Blade-Companies vultures sucking the blood of poor labourers hence instead of sending remittances to their families, many of them end up paying never ending interests to the blade-company. Concerned with the majority of Indians being among those who commit suicide in the UAE, the author tries to ponder on the reason of high depression among the Indians.
This is the real story of the majority unskilled Indians working in the Gulf countries. Hence the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) have sent notification to reserve one third of the 15% supernumerary seats for the children of Indians living in the Gulf countries, author suggests extending this quota for all the courses in Indian universities. Many people may not be aware, but the AICTE notification states that there shall be no NRI fees for children of Indians in Gulf countries. "The children of Indian workers in the Gulf Countries shall be treated at par with resident citizens," says the notification.

Mr. Jaya Prakash Hegde, enough of these celebrations, time to visit Udupi/Chicmagalur Constituency and keep in touch with voters and fullfill their needs and the promises you gave them, you have time to visit Dubai and other Gulf countries but no time to make a padayathra door to door and thank the voters and ask their needs, fullfill your promises, you have only less than 2yrs left for next lok sabha election, people of Udupi/Chicmagalur elected you as nice person with good image, not because of Congress, congress is corrupt and dirty party just like BJP in karnataka, look whats happening in UPA at the centre, soon they will be kicked out from power if they keep on going like this.
Mr. JP Hegde please visit Voters frequently and fullfill your promises you gave them during by election. This is our sincere advice to you from all the voters from Udupi/Chicmagalur Constituency.

Mr. Hegde seems to be a gentleman, hope he will do some good work.
I pity the knowledge of Mr. Yatin Rao about the Employees in the Gulf. To educate him I would say if there are 100,000/- Employees working in the gulf from coastal Area 90% of these people will be earning below 2000/- Qatar Riyals, or in UAE Dhirams, this amount will be after the 2 hrs O.T. for which they will have to get up at least by 4-30 or 5 A.M. Out of this 2000/- they will have to have their food, call back home, use money for their necessities like soaps, washing powder's etc etc. So how much do you think they will be able to save end of the month to pay the taxes. Some of them dont even get paid for months and mind you, whatever money send to their family backhome will be spent lavishly. Yeah in two year's he may get a Ticket from the Company which will be looking for the least priced ticket, these people dont complain. People who complain are the ones who go on their own ticket, due to some reason's may be emergency, for you will be travelling by sitting in such narrow seat's without much room for your leg's with only two toilet's facilities by paying more than other budget Airlines which are operating sucessfully in the Middle east. Now my friend is it wrong to state the fact's of the Air lines, for they know only one language that is to complain. Once if you step into their shoes, I will bet that you be keep both your trap's shut. So please do not get into other's problem's.

I appriciate JP's dress code.He is in his formals as usual.Look at his body language, its purely professional and not necessarily political. That is why people across the constituency without religion, caste, color, language barriers voted for him to be in parliament as a true representative of Karavali. As rightly said he is an speaking MP.
Many times after election winning person stiches a few 'Kurta pyjamas' and switches to political scenario. Many times those are "Horage shingara..olage Golisoppu"
JP Hegde is a 'think tank' by himself and most decent politician. That is why he has won the hearts of the people.Goodluck Mr.Hegdeyavare.

    Yathin Rao,
Do you know how many billions of dollars NRI's pumping into indian economy? Can you tell me what is your contribution for the indian economy?
You need to have proper details before comenting. If NRIs have tax benifit that is beacuse India wants its NRI citizens to invest in India only.
Secondly If NRIs get the voting rights then Congress is going to benifit since most of the christian and muslim vote bank is out side india.

Who told you that all NRI's are rich.Do you have any idea about how many indian people are living in U.A.E, and how many have a decent salary. The meaning of budgeted airline is cheaper compare to other airlines.for your information same airindia express flies to Chennai,or kerala much cheaper than mangalore.we agree in season it can go up.But not double the price of other airlines. To Mangalore, only airindia express is flying, that is why they are charging reluctently as they wish.

JP, we are proud to see you in UAE, however what about Qatar visit. Your proposal on voting for NRI’s through internet is a good one, but majority of NRI’s are facing genuine labor problems within ME, who are need of basic needs. In this context typical suggestion is to focus more on getting international accreditation to the existing Mangalore International Airport where we can have internal flights landing. Rigorous Industrial development of our twin districts by introducing LNG receiving terminal at Mangalore. The power and water shortages within UDUPI and DK districts need to be mitigated.

JP Hegde,MP, one of the people friendly MP,I can vouch, through out India.Infact, I did share to face book the visual ad in DAIJIWORLD in which I did comment which attracted JP.Hegde's attention who sent messages in my Facebook.Apart from that I was hit with Face Book friendship request from JPH friends from UDUPI,SALIGRAMA,MANIPAL and even from Bangalore.......Interestingly before Nomination was filed,I predicted 50,000 lead to JPH.On the other hand,I sent a message to JPH of talking over the PHONE which was buzz all the time.Fortunately later in the week I did connect with JPH over the phone and his response was overwhelming and that also in the midst of oath taking in DELHI. I talk around three minutes. His personality, good gesture, social responsibility, duty conscious are amazing and I guess,UDUPI-CHICK constituency will not go out from him another 20 years.Really UDUPI-CHIK constituency voters lucky to get such kind of good hearted MP.

It is a good idea if NRI gets voting rights in using technology.Ahead, important task is Managalore Airport up gradation which could be done from the active support of JPH.ALL THE BEST SIR, FOR YOUR FUTURE ENDEAVOR.

I don't understand why these rich NRIs keep complaining about costly tickets to Mangalore during peak season.

No airline can survive in this world with fixed prices for a route. Prices change based on demand and season. AIE is not in there for charity.

People especially NRIs from Gulf who earn lakhs of rupees per month without paying a paisa in tax should not expect poor Indian tax holders to subsidise their plane tickets for vacation.

I also concur with Jeevan. JP Hegde is busy accepting sanmanas and touring around instead of doing any work. This is not a good start one would've expected from him.
