Udupi: Intra-university Cricket Tourney CPL 2012 Held by Manipal University

Udupi, Apr 20: The student forum of the department of commerce, Manipal University,  ‘Zephyr’, organized its first intra-university cricket tournament, Commerce Premier League (CPL) recently.

The tournament was inaugurated by Dr Vinod Nayak, sports advisor, Manipal University. In his inaugural address, Dr Nayak spoke about the transformation in the cricketing sector, witnessing changes in the version like long day’s play of 90 overs to as short as T 10 (10 Overs) cricket.

Y S Rao, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) approved umpire also spoke on the occasion. He stressed that the university can encourage such activities every year to bring out the hidden talents among the youth at Manipal.

Sandeep S Shenoy, head, department of commerce, Manipal University welcomed the gathering. Guru Prasad Rao, assistant professor and coordinator CPL, delivered the vote of thanks. Faculties and students of the department of commerce were present on the occasion.

20 teams with different composition involving faculties, students and non teaching staff of Manipal University participated in the five day event.

The winner of the Commerce Premier League 2012 edition was 'Manipal University Eleven' captained by Rahul Kotian. The team defeated Manipal Bugs, MIT, Manipal by four wickets in a closely contested encounter.

In the closing ceremony Dr Kemparaj, physical director, MIT, Manipal and Sandeep S Shenoy, head, department of commerce, Manipal University distributed the prizes. The winning team bagged the cash prize of Rs 5,000 along with the winning trophy and medals.

Dr Vinod C Nayak was declared the 'Best Bowler' of the Tournament. Rahul Kotian was declared the 'Player of the Tournament'.

Student coordinators Ren Trevor, Isthihak Mohammad and Divya Gupta were present.
