Mangalore: Mock Drill at Airport - Emergency Services in Top Shape

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (BG)

Mangalore, Apr 20: Mangalore Airport on Friday April 20 was bustling with activity, and for a moment, it seems like an emergency had been issued. There were fire personnel all over the place, ambulances on alert and stretchers being carried here and there.

It was not an emergency situation, but the last of the safety week when a mock drill is conducted every year.

The mock drill was organized to test the efficiency of the fire and other emergency services, and to ensure that they are equipped and ready to tackle any situation if and when it arises.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Airport director M R Vasudeva said that the mock drill was a part of the annual safety week observance, beginning from April 14. The airport conducts complete exercise of the fire services to ensure their efficiency, he said, adding that the aim was also to make the general public aware.

After the mock drill, it was declared that the mock drill was successful and that the emergency services are capable of meeting any situation.

The fire personnel were seen in full action, climbing up and down slopes, using water hoses to douse the fire that they had lit near the airport, 'rescuing' 'trapped' people who had volunteered for the job and rushing them to waiting ambulances.

Airport officials including M R Vasudeva and coastal security forces were at the spot.

God Forbid : Imagine another incident like the Air India Express in Mangalore....Would the AAI manage to save lives in the same ravine ? Is there any infrastructure in place now at the crash site ? Can the fire brigade reach the spot in 5 minutes and dose off the fire with foam ? Is there a permanent 12 inches water pipeline with atleast 2 high pressure pumps / water tank around the crash site with a minimum of 50,000 - 1,00,000 litres of water in an emergency ? Besides having water outlets below the runway ( both sides )there should be outlets at atleast 5 - 6 points along the runway with long enough hose pipes.

We have to learn by past mistakes. The road ( airport exit road ) is narrow, steep and in bad shape. In an emergency a fully loaded fire tender will take hours to get to the spot.By that time lives would be lost and the wreckage would be charred beyond recognition.

The drill performed shows a type of rescue in a road traffic accident !

Following the complaint by 812 Foundation, the MCA sent a special team to mangalore on 27-28 March 2012 and the team found that the Fire Services took 12 minutes to reach the same accident site when they should have reached under 3 minutes. Now this mock drill was to preempt bad press before release of that report. Mangalore Airport is better in PR skills than Safety Skills. Unless people in mangalore come together and show protest, it will continue to remain unsafe.

You are correct..... the state government has to take initiatives. Along with airport, airlines and passengers, villagers also will be benifitted with a good road facility.

Mock drill definitely helps, but it has to be followed up in regular frequencies. The lessons learnt from Air India Express fatal accident are to be brought to the notice of everyone and mitigation measures to be studied.Just blaming one another and making fun of mock drills will not help.. please include civilians in the surrounding areas of Bajpe airport in these drills so that they provide the backup..don't stop these drills at regular intervals.

We are fit only for the mock drills, then brag about our sucessful mock drills. If only a few lives could have been saved during the plane crash then it would been o.k. as it is I dont see any use of these mock drills, I think in real emergency all will panic and no much benefit. Anyway I hope these drills will help in some way.

I would highly appreciate a mock drill done on the custom officers at the Mangalore Airport. They are a gang of robbers, who try to rob everyone. Not a single receipt is given to anyone, all money exchange is done openly. The best part is they have a good team spirit. They pass you on from one officer to another till you get fed up and pay whatever they want. I have experienced this myself

    Sincerely hope that these 'Drills'
do not 'Mock', at the authorities,
    in case of an 'Emergency',leaving
a 'muck' in the face! This often is the case.

Mr. M R Vasudeva, why you have not taking any initiative against the Car-parking charge racket. Why the airport authority not installing automatic ticketing machine with toll gate at both ends. Why the parking money collecting employees are not in uniform and name batch? Why there is no proper instruction & tariff board at a prominent place at the entrance of car-park to guide the commuters entering it?
Mr. M R Vasudeva, you have to address the public grievances. I wish our MPs, MLAs & DC too look into the matter.

Personally, I reall appreciate mock drill what was done will help.

Now, let us go for real drill Mr. MR Vasudeva and let us analyze airport services offered in Mangalore airport - looting @ money exchange, customs looting and efficient communications, parking fraud (cheating) when flight delayed. Here is real opportunity and you miss it.
