'Dirty Picture' TV Premiere Stalled Despite Cuts, Bollywood Furious

Mumbai/New Delhi, Apr 23 (IANS): The much-anticipated television premiere of Vidya Balan starrer "The Dirty Picture" was stalled at the last moment Sunday, despite 59 cuts in the film to make it suitable for television viewing. While film's director Milan Luthria is shocked and disappointed, filmmaker Karan Johar branded it hypocrisy.

The government moved quickly to stall the screening of film by an entertainment television channel, ostensibly due to its "adult" content, and asked the channel to telecast it late in the night after prime time.

Information and broadcasting ministry officials in New Delhi told IANS that they have sent a letter to Sony TV not to telecast the movie during prime time Sunday.

"The channel has been told to screen the movie only after 11 p.m.," they said to a query in this regard.

This directive from the ministry left Luthria, fuming, even as the Mumbai film industry reacted angrily to the development.

"I am shocked and disappointed that this decision was taken at the last moment. For the last two months we have been working on this and as per the rule few scenes had to be cut to get the U/A certificate. Don't harass us like this," Luthria told IANS.

"We re-submitted the film after 59 cuts. Now I am curious to know why has this happened. DVDs of the films are already out and many people have already seen it," Luthria added.

The film, which is reportedly based on the story of late southern actress Silk Smitha and fetched Vidya Balan her first National Award, was to be shown at 12 noon and at 8 p.m. Sunday on Sony TV. However, it was not shown. Sony had bought the rights of the Ekta Kapoor's production venture for Rs 8 crore.

After the decision to pull it off from the small screen, Sony ran a ticker saying: "For unavoidable reasons we regret to inform that the film 'The Dirty Picture' will not be telecast today. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted."

Johar too was surprised at the decision.

"A national award winning film cannot have a national telecast??? this is not an irony but plain and simple hypocrisy!!!! #dirtypicture. If the censorship is not a final authority then what is??? Complicated and blurred lines defeat the core of democracy!!!! #dirtypicture," he tweeted.

The film, which also features Tusshar Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah and Emraan Hashmi, is replete with "bold scenes" and after cuts it was given a UA certification for being shown on Indian television.

Tusshar also expressed his disappointment on Twitter.

"Really unfortunate that after all the necessary cuts and a valid UA certificate, The Dirty Picture could not be telecast today on Sony TV," he tweeted.

"In light of recent events that exposed the dark side of Bollywood, 'The Dirty Picture' was well timed as it depicts a similar harsh reality!

"Sad that inspite of being acclaimed for it's entertaining realism and having won 3 National Awards the regulatory forces have stalled the show," Tusshar posted.

    Don Maam
If ever they were profound messages sent to the masses, it was through SSS,RTGM, classics under the RK banner. SSS was a classic in the sense,RK, was on a venture to portray what 'beauty' really meant-and the emphasis on
the hardships of a true 'Ganga'
magnificient ,to say the least. Well if all eyes were glued or rivetted on ....n ....., instead of the message, then nobody can be blamed certainly not RK! Dirty picture, Murder1 , Murder2, etc, etc, are no patch on the films you have mentioned. Therefore there can't be the 'same yardsticks! You just cannot paint them with the same brush!

Irony! Our legislators who make such absured rules and regulations can sit in citadel of democracy and watch porn but people cannot watch a so called 'exclusive' movie even in their houses and that too after 59 cuts! When enough and more 'adult' material is available in various forms and which is available for everyone at just a CLICK, why make issue of a movie which had been released with the U/A certification. We are a strange lot! We know our children are curious and serious about being and knowing 'adult'. We know that we cannot stop them from knowing the barred stuff.

But our policy is that 'let them learn about sex from anywhere, even from the street or from dogs, but we will never educate them about the same at home! And that is what is happening around! Teenagers, students avail the 'adult' stuff from everywhere and form their own knowledge from everywhere except from their parents. The problem which could be resolved with theoritical knowledge provided by the parents is often made complex when others teach it through 'practicles' just becaue speaking of sex at home is not our CULTURE!

Its an irony in India we all from the govt to citizens love to react, rather than act. Firstly when Dirty Picture movie was released in theatres it wasnt with an "A" but an "U/A", hypicrosy at its peak. A country with maximum rape cases, eve teasers, child murders and honour killings, and ministry wants the movie to be telecasted after 11.00 pm, what a shame...Indian mindset is a pevert, so telecasting the movie at any time wont change the manner we think. Be real and act with courage and conviction rather than appeasment.

    Dear Tresa..
There's a difference between a 'killing' and 'seducing to kill'. The latter probably makes a 'killing', albeit slowly! Maybe
the Censor Board Members, found this out by experience! Hence the
    'cuts' that matter!

    Mayya Sir
Don't be pessimistic. You mean Silk Smitha's curse going the Nagavalli way do you? Why take it in the 'negative'? If SS's curse 'sticks'positive, then we may be in for more 'bouncier' and 'juicier'times ! Meenakumariji and Silk Smithaji for your information fell in a 'Trap', Hemaji knew how to lay a 'Trap'and succeeded. Life's like that Mayyaji,it's just a matter of making the right moves at the right time. Why worry over Hemaji's kids? All have their own, don't they?

'Dirty Picture' winning a National Award is an irony. Anyhow, personally I fear that this Vidya Balan would also meet the same fate as Silk Smitha faced. It is the regular story of socalled great Cinema Actresses attaining a sad end of life, not only such 'bold' but actresses like Meena Kumari also. As for Hema Malini hailed from a respectable family, there is no future for their kids.
