Mangalore, Apr 23: In yet another case of its kind, a water pipe at Pumpwell here burst on Monday April 23, causing a heavy loss of water.

At the same time, pipes at Nagori and Simon Lane near Capitanio also broke leading to further loss.

According to locals at the spot, the pipe at Pumpwell was already leaking the previous night on Sunday April 22. On Monday at around 12.30 pm, the pressure in the pipe increased and burst.

The force was such that water splashed to a distance of about 20 ft, spraying on passing vehicles. The vehicular movement was stopped for a while, leading to heavy traffic snarl.

The pipe at Pumpwell supplies water from Thumbay dam to Bendoorwell tank. Immediately after the incident, emergency measures were taken to stop the water supply at the dam. Hence, the residents across the three areas are facing severe problems.

Though the force of the water has reduced, it is still flowing out of the pipe. The pipes are made of wrought iron and are very old. There is cement covering on top. Sources said that as water was being supplied on alternate days, air was blocked inside which led the pipes to burst.

Kankanady rural police have arrived at the spot. MCC executive engineer Nenge Gowda is yet to arrive.

At Nagori, the force was such that the water splashed on the roof of a shop on the other end of the road.

The city is already reeling under water crisis, with most areas being supplied water in tankers. The latest incident has further worsened the crisis.

This is the second such incident in less than a month. On March 26, a pipe had burst in Bendoorwell, causing severe loss of water and damage to shops.

MCC lacks something called in modern technical field as Preventitive Maintenance. Here its all about laying new pipes to under supplied areas and not bothering about the pipes laid in the past 50 years. Such a shame , were we dream for a International airport we still suffer such maladies in the system.Hope we get some visionaries in MCC instead of the useless lot who strove to use it as a stepping stone for their political career.

This burst is certainly not due to air lock as there are enough air release valves in the pipe line and this usually happens at the higher areas. This has happened purely due to corrosion of the pipes. Either these pipes are old or of substandard. This will happen again and again.

It's rubbish is there something called as "waste of water"? It's lack of responsibility and poor workmanship. I'm sure our governance will wake up when not a of water in every house including theirs... But the blame will be put on some poor man on the street...

Hope it is high time that, the water supply piping has completed its service life (normally it will be for 30 years). In this context it is strongly suggested to replace the water supply lines with new ones. Question arises, is MCC having enough budget for this type contingency.

When tanker's are used to supply this is bound to happen. This also tells us that no one is bothered about the shelf life of the Pipes, may be they were laid during the time of Mangalore Bank Limited, and since then they have not been changed. I cannot verify this as my Grandpa has passed a long time back. Moreover we have to verify whether MCC is alloting money to the mantainence and relaying old pipes, if so I am sure this will be pocketed by them.

It seems main lines are not having vents at higher elevations. Normally when a line is started air vent to be opened first and then flow to be regularised. Very poor design.
Atlease offials can check the design again before it bursts somehwere else and cause heavy loss.
