12-Year Jail for Accepting Bribe of Rs 600!

Daijiworld Media Network

Yadgiri (Karnataka), Apr 24 : 'Aane Kaddaru Kalla, Adike Kaddaru Kalla' (a thief is a thief, whether he steals elephant or arecanut), so goes a Kannada saying. And nothing proves this better than our law. They say everybody is equal before the law, but the hitch is, while 'Aane Kalla' escapes easily and even manages to rule in politics, the poor 'Adike Kalla' is made a mincemeat of with rigourous punishment!

Lingappa Maggad, a gram panchayath secretary from Yadgiri district's Surapura taluk was caught by the Lokayukta police on June 17, 2008 while accepting a bribe of Rs 600 from a citizen who was applying for a house under the 'Ashraya' government scheme 'Ashraya". Caught red-handed, he was arrested immediately by the Lokayukta police.

His punishment - 12 years in jail and Rs 50,000 fine! And if he fails to pay the amount, then he has to spend two more years behind the bars.

The sentence was awarded by the district judge Sanjiv Kumar.

If all bribery and corruption cases were to be dealt with so stringently, one can only imagine how many government officials and politicians might have been in jail by now. If 600 rupees can attract a sentence of 12 years and Rs 50,000 fine, what would be case where thousands of crores are involved?

Can we really then say the law is equal for all?

Now that's a million dollar question!

Wow, what a comments from the readers! My interpretation is different as I think "Lingappa was caught while accepting a bribe of Rs 600 from a citizen". But the punishment was not just taking 600 bribe... he might be taking bribe since several years, there may be evidence showing in his assets and bank balances. Therefore, the punishment might be given considering all these factors not just at the time of taking 600 rupees... but he may be taking 600 rupees 20-30 times a day or more...

This is very good judgement. We need to tackle the corruption at the lowest level. Today we see corruption in all spears of our life. Nothing will move unless you pay bribes or use influence which is mockery of democracy. Today ordinary people hold lot of black money in the form of real estate, gold and the same people accuse the government of not acting enough. To clear the mess of corruption/nepotism we need to change for better. Using influence to ones favor is more damaging then bribe in some cases.

It is true that in society big politicians are escaping the punishment for their crime through money power, same time we all should understand that the person who took 600 RS bribe also should be punished severely , or else later he also will fall under the list of politician who is taking huge amount of bribes.

    Dear readers....
I was not surprised at all with the verdict. The reason for my not being surprised is very simple...
In high-profile cases that involves millions of money, the culprit will get away with minimum punishment just because they influence the judicial system either by their political power and money power (if a person from political background)or merely by money power (if a person from corporate background). Will any one deny the fact that our judicial system has some way or other affected by the corruption? (Those who dis-agree with this please remember former CJI episode)

Final Punch: How can any one give fare judgement(here fair means..in favor of accused!)for mere 600 profit..!!!!???
