Kasargod, Apr 28: A passenger of Konkan Railways (KR) train service on the Mumbai-Thiruvananthapuram train service was robbed of 38 sovereigns of gold jewellery and cash on Friday April 27.

Pratima, a resident of Hosdurg, near Kanhangad, who was living in Mumbai’s central suburb of Thane, was reportedly robbed of 38 sovereigns of gold jewellery and cash amounting to Rs 8,000.

Pratima had left Mumbai and was headed for her hometown Hosadurg by Netravati Express train along with her 15-year-old son Chetan and 9-year-old daughter Anushka at 11.30 am on Thursday April 26. In the train, Pratima finished dinner and went to sleep, but was later woken up by a thud near her seat.

To her utter shock, she found that her bag was ripped open and the jewellery and cash that was placed in a plastic bag was missing. She alerted Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel who conducted a search but found nothing, except a paper with the scent of a drug near Pratima's seat. The police suspect that she might have been made unconscious with the help of the drug even as she slept.

Pratima informed police control room in Mangalore when the train reached the city and lodged a complaint with the railway police. She later left for her hometown.

Nowadays hand held not so expensive metal detectors are available in the west, which are used by thieves to detect gold. It is possible such metal detectors are now available in India. They can easily find out who is carrying gold or where it is stored.

This is the marriage season. So passengers would be carrying their ornaments. If somebody wears mehendi, it becomes obvious that she is returning from a marriage. Avoid discussion with anybody in the station or train that one was on marriage visit. Do not accept food from strangers. Since there is no guard, always think that there is a thief around and be alert. Do not display marriage gifted pouches of fresh sweets. If you appear overcautious with your belongings or handbaggages, you may give your game away that you are carrying valuables.

I think there should be one railway protection force patroling for about 3-4 comaprtments in train. These policemen must patrol the comaprtments regulary, otherwise it may be hard to travel in trains now as thefts are on the rise,

I think Pratima and her kids are lucky as no harm was done to them. First of all she should not have carried so much gold and cash when travelling in public. Nobody knows for sure whether she was drugged or otherwise. If she is lucky she might get whatever she lost but it is doughtful as in most cases the police are in hand with these crooks.

One word of caution for women. Gold prices have hit the roof. Keep all you gold in lockers and while traveling use imitation jewelery.

It is very common to see systemic robbery of train passangers especially in overnight journey.Robbers might spray sleeping gas, do not accept any kind of food or beverages from strangers.I feel the women is stupid to carry so much gold.

I think we read these type of robberies very often especially in Konkan Railways. I think no effort from police to nab these robbers so far. Unfortunately railway police or Konkan railway authority too didn't take any step to stop this happening. It appears that Konkan railway is not safe for passengers. May be good only for goods trains, in which they get lots of profit. May be Konkan railway wanted this to happen very often to discourage more passenger train in this route to give a way to goods trains?. If not why railway dept don't provide enough security to passengers?.
