Udupi, May 15:
The residents of Yellur gram panchayat forcibly stopped the laying of high tension cables for transmitting 400 KV electricity to Hassan from UPCL (Udupi Power Corporation Limited) power plant by Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) on Monday May 14.

Yellur gram panchayat president Sumana, member Jayant Kumar, Nagesh Bhat, ZP member Arun Shetty, VHP district vice-president Prakash Shetty, Navin N Shetty, and others hindered the laying of high tension cables by KPTCL supported by police security, on Monday morning.

KPTCL superintendent engineer Govind Rao and executive engineer P D B Rao said that the high tension cables are being laid on the orders of the deputy commissioner (DC).  However, the protesters said that permission was granted by the DC in relation to carrying out the work from Nandikoor to Hassan and they will not allow any work under the limits of Yellur gram panchayat. The permission of the gram panchayat was needed to go ahead with the works.

“The work on laying high tension cables for a distance of 180 km from Shanti village in Hassan to UPCL is underway and nearly 90 percent of it has been completed.  Three towers and laying of high tension cables is pending in the limits of Yellur and Nandikoor.  If the transmission cables pass through forest areas, then the permission of respective gram panchayats has to be obtained while in other cases its not necessary,” said P D B Rao to media persons.

Elderly Vishwanath Bhat laid down in front of the KPTCL truck despite the hot sun, expressing his anguish over the snatching of basic right to live and said he would not allow any work.

Other residents Raghavendra Bhat, Muddu Moolya and family pled that the concerned department had not issued them the notice and awarded any compensation, and instead forcibly tries to undertake the work on their land.

KPTCL officer Govind Rao replied that the compensation cheque has been denied by the beneficiaries, alleging that the amount was very low.

Kaup circle inspector Shivanand Walekar, and Padubidri sub-inspector Mahadev Shetty provided heavy security at the location.

KPTCL assistant executive engineers Mohan and Praveen, and executive engineer Kumar were present.

Meanwhile, the work was resumed after the written orders of the DC to this effect were presented by KPTCL officers to the leader of protesters at about 3.15 pm on Monday.

Telephone towers, High tension electric cables and communicating electric meters produce electromagnetic waves and are harmful. They can cause chest pain headache and other serious health problems. Installation of any such equipment within the residential area is illegal.

Protests always are supported by lobbies which don't want stable power generation. The private power producers (those with cogeneration at sugar factories), ensure this. During the peak of summer, when hydro electric power generation reaches its low, these lobbies sell power to the government at exorbitant price (8-12 rupees per unit).
Obviously, the share from their earnings reach the right places, so that lobbies ensure major power plants are either shut down due to "technical failure" or due to "environmental reasons".

There is enough barren land in Hassan. Why not they establish a plant there? We have power shortage in Udupi Mangalore. Use the locally generated electricity for local use. Already locals have sacrificed enough due to this coal plant!! Yediyurappa gave enough roads and big development for Hassan Shimogga. Our MLA's did not give anything to us,sleeping, moreover providing luxury to hassan...we face power cut and they get power!! BJP working style...Power Minister is shuttling between state and national capital for Eddy power (chair power)!

Another 100 years also India will not be a developed country. People of India are not allowing for any developments. Strike, protests, bribe and uneducated politicians and people. When the price of electricity increased people strike and damage Govt property. The loss of damage to be borne by the people. We cut many trees yearly, are we planting ?

One has to look for two issues here:
1)Compensation to the land owners. 2) Adequate SAFETY measures of overhead lines that pass through residential areas. Additionally studies indicate the high tension cables are prone to radiation which causes typically skin cancer for the people exposed and no vegetation is possible around the corridor of high tension cables. Are these factors taken into account? It is not a negative approach towards development, but this is brought in light of the people who suffer due to this advancement.

Pass cables, through forests, but compensate the loss of forest by planting wild rainforest trees.

Pass cables through agriculture land and compensate them adequately after thorough negotiations with the farmers.

Pass cables through houses, but relocate them to a better low land by compensating house, land etc one-to-one

But if there is a developmental projects at the cost of citizens, protest unto death.

Once the KPTCL generates electicity, they are not going to give any income to the citizens who have sacrificed their land for this project.

Anyway, the loss to wildlife, due to the electromagnetic impact of electric waves is ignored totally by the developmental authority. Environmentalists should protest too to minimize the impact to wildlife through better planning of cable path.

For those who live in cities come to villages and feel yourself the agony faced by them rather than viewing pictures. Come to padoor to see how ground water is rampantly being utilised by ISPRL. Finally do not blame if food rates become very high due to non-availability. Please do not recommend pizza instead of rice in that case.
