High Speed Rail to Connect Udupi - Kerala in 3 Hours

Daijiworld Media Network

Mumbai, May 15: The ambitious high speed corridor project of Kerala government will commence next year, according to Kerala chief minister Ooman Chandy. The 1.20 Lac crore project will have 80% private funding through loans, and remaining amount will be invested by state and central government jointly, he stated.

Chandy was in Mumbai for a road-show to showcase the forthcoming ‘Emerging Kerala 2012' global investor meet, which would be held from September 12 to 14 in Kochi.

The first phase of the project will be completed in 2018 when Thiruvananthapuram - Cochin route for high speed rail is ready.

Though the initial plan was to establish high speed rail project only up to Cochin - Kasargod, later it was decided to extend Mangalore and Udupi. In 2020, high speed corridor high speed project will be completed with Thiruvananthapuram - Udupi route.

Currently 634 km Thiruvananthapuram -Udupi route is travelled by train for about 15 hours, but high speed rail will enable passengers to complete this route within three to four hours.

Kerala High Speed Rail Corporation chief T Balakrishnan said that high speed rail facility is available in Japan and China for years, we would initially introduce 200km per hour speed rails here. He said that, in Japan high speed rails run for 350 km per hour.

Very nice Joke!!! What will happen to the home/property owners, when there is already land scarcity going on in many parts of Kerala with sky rocketing prices? Do the Central Govt. (Railways) will acquire people's homes and property by force and paying cheaper prices? I don't think the people, atleast from Kerala, is going to allow that. They may be able to try this idea in our metropolitan cities.
The first thing India, as a nation, has to do is to stop the corruption in every phases and try to eradicate the poverty of the people. Then we can try to imitate and modernize like any other foreign developed nations.

First let the Railway put up the second Ullal bridge that has been languishing for years. If the first bridge falls all traffic will stop. Some years ago Mangalore Mail derailed in Calicut and many people died. Its not easy to implement all this. Existing tracks on Mangalore-Shoranur route are built on masonry bridges which are in precarious conditions. Land acquisition for a new railway right of way is a huge problem in Kerala with local politics and endless litigation. See how much trouble they are having to implement widening of NH-66 in Kasaragod, with litigation to stop the widening, eventually NHAI may only widen to 45metres instead of 60 metres. So it is unlikely a separate right of way will come. Before all this basic track electrifcation between Shoranur and Mangalore will have to carried out. This is not going to happen soon either. So on technical grounds this report is full of holes. The condition of the existing rakes is filthy, let them have clean rakes, punctual rail service in a safe manner. A few months ago we saw in these esteemed columns how schoolchildren were hanging out of the bogies in coming to Mangalore from Kasaragod. Has this been addressed. This is all natak and tamasha by some idiot in Kerala with no technical understanding.

Many readers have raised doubts about possibility of introducing High Speed train by Kerala Govt.Kerala Government which successfully established 3 international airports in a short period and on the way to make 4th intl airport at Kannur(Cannanore) can definitely start Bullet Train between Tvm-Udupi.No doubt about that.Atleast twin district people should thank Kerala Govt becasue they can reach Udupi from Manglore in 15 minutes !!

I request Karnataka Govt to start Bullet train from Mangalore to Delhi. Now it takes nearly 3 days.Bullet train will reach destination in less than 24 hrs.! Is it possible ? It is possible if some good leaders DREAM like Kerala CM.But our leaders are dreaming in sleep.Actually real dream will not allow you to sleep. In this case,Mr.Oommen Chandy,CM is having sleepless nights..Yes..He is a true leader.

We should not compare India with China because China is much disciplined, patriotic, dedicated, hard working, strongly united and to top it all they have a dictatorial Communist Govt who can take decision without prolonged delay.
In India we fight in the name of religion, caste, region, language, food habits, festivals and what not. The so called, our MAAY_BAAP politicians are interested only in getting positions and ministerial chairs. They use Govt machineries, Departments and Babus to fill their own coffer and they don’t even hesitate to fight among themselves to earn ill-gotten wealth. I feel sad to say that, the reality is, the Police & the Govt departments, the financial institutions, the multi-medias… are all biased and support only the upper class Indians and the influential corrupt politicians. The end result is the so called “India Shining” takes the beating and India’s over all developments and growths go at a snail’s pace.

It is possible for Kerala Government since they proved many times that if willing they can do any constructive works at any time. They have strong hold in Central Government. Their MPs’ always work hard when it comes to developmental works at mini State Kerala. Moreover they have “Master of Konkan Railway” Mr. Sridharan too. Their State Government will do collective works irrespective of their Political back ground. Contrarily in Karnataka, we have our MPs’ doing nothing and State Government Political Leaders will always engage in road show, rath yatra or purification after rave party, etc but never comes together for any developmental works in Karnataka. The classic example is dual carriage road of N66 Mangalore Udupi National Highway still struck at Suratkal area and they still struggling to take decision of Padubidri Bypass road. Whereas in Kerala they have 4 International Airports within a range of 200/300KM from each other Airport
