Mangalore: Another Raid - MCC Officials Turn Attention on Hotels

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (PS)

Mangalore, Jun 2: Mangalore City Corporation health officials on Saturday June 2 swooped down on restaurants at Kodialbail and nearby areas in the city in a bid to check hygeine standards, quality of food and licences.

During the raid, it was found that several restaurants including Taj Mahal had stored food items like fruits that had turned stale. The officials found that onions and tomatoes were being chopped on the floor, and an official is said to have called the condition as good as a 'drainage'.

The officials also inspected Hotel Ayodhya and found that it was not clean, and that crockery and utensils were not sterilized. The licence of the hotel was seized.

Food joints like Danish juice centre that were found without valid licences were sealed, and the owners were told to restart their business only after getting appropriate documents. However, it soon began funtioning after the owner got it done from MCC.

The officials inspected higher-end hotels like Ocean Pearl too, where cleanliness and licence were in order but the food was found to be left uncovered. Owner of another hotel, Sri Rama Bhavan, was warned for failing to maintain hygiene and cleanliness.

In another hotel, prohibited colours were being used, the stain of which did not go away even after washing hands.

Fitness and health certificates and personal hygience of the employees were also scrutinized. In rainy season, it is mandatory to provide hot water to the customers, even if they do not ask for it, an official said.

MCC joint commissioner Srikanth Rao led the raid operation, along with health officials.

The plaintains or Nendra kai is for BALEHANNU PODI OR BAJJE , I guess.

If one really enters any hotel kitchen he will never eat the food prepared there. The Hygiene standard in India is very poor except may be in star hotels.

In the US (like in New York and a few other states) and in some other western countries (including Canada), a food business establishment, has to undergo classes on safely served food where they teach about cross-contamination of food, personal hygiene, food associated bacteria / illnesses that are potentially harmful to humans etc.

It is a small intense crash course with video training about food temperature danger zones, role play on issues of employee and employer relations in a food service establishment, and other associated reading material for a multiple choice exam that has to be compulsarily passed before opening any food business by an entrepreneur.

While this is an exhaustively intense but a condensed program, MCC could also think of something on these lines, so that everyone gets properly trained in serving safe food to the public.

Some hair, some sand and some sweat is common in Indian food.Afterall we love spicy food. The law enforcing agency should not only give importance to hygeine they should also check the quality of oil used, quantity of salt, butter and chilli powder colours etc.Because the consumers do not care except the instinct of their toungue but they are not aware of the dangers involved in consuming these things in excess amount. The hotel fellows should clean all the ingredients used for the food for unwanted material like dust, sand etc.But who cares? I dont care so why should they care?

Many cooks scratch and many waiters dig their noses ( which is a very common indian habit) and don't wash their hands afterwards. At least MCC should make sign boards that have to be compulsarily stuck on the kitchen walls that say, - for example, "Employees must wash their hands with soap and water for about 20 seconds, after visiting bathroom" - either in kannada, hindi or english. This way atleast the cooks / waiters will be aware of taking the initiative to be clean after visiting bathroom.

Mangalore doenst havea periodic public Health inspection nor any stringent public health law. Hygeine seems to be something missing always from our culutre. We beleive in building glittering facade for the front of residences and commercial plazas , I fear visiting the restrooms of these places which are messy as any !!!!The public health inspectors seems to not have got his weekly free meal nor tip. They will visit your joint have a sumptuos meal and state all things are as per operating standards. Donot be fooled by these cheap gimmicks , MCC is not racing to reach ISO standards. If cannot process garbage and recycle it leave alone other priorities. The MCC provided untreated water from lakya dam , where the heck was their standards.

I have seen people preparing mixing masala powder with legs, working ladies given few Rs to work and no cleanliness.same powder used in our kitchen.God should save us from all this mess.

I never eat banana Halwa and banana Podi in the restaurants because the bananas brought from the general market are all rotten & rejected bananas.

The Taj Mahal, Ayodhya and adjucant to Ayodhya is situated one more very, very un-hygienic hotel. I received a teaspoon for Idli in the Taj Mahal near milagris and its back side was so much rubbish deposited and not at all cleaned. This was nearly a few years back. I showed to my wife and we decided to show the manager/the cashier.

But the manager just avoided our complaint and gave it the waiter. Matter is finished. I felt so much bad that the manager had not even felt bad of their uncleanness. If I had the mobile like now I would have certainly taken the video and given to daijiworld for publishing or showed to the corporation.

Supposedly, I had showed to the MCC there also corrupt people. Now after MCC's complaint of corruption highlighted by the media, only they are woke up.

Any way I appreciate the move of MCC. There are many such hotels minting money without providing hygienic food to the public.

Very good job. Happy that hotels are being checked. The way vegetables and meat are handled is absolutely bad. In one new restaurant, they served rotten chicken. Does the cook not know that the chicken is decomposed ? the onions which are cut are not washed nor coriander leaves. even the plates and spoons are not sterlised. I have found dirty spoons being served. The head of the servers need to be covered when serving food and they should be made to wear gloves when serving. I have seen one server sweeping the floor with the broom and same broom he is cleaning table. on seeing that we walked out of the hotel.

Good MCC officials. Keep up the work. Let the hotel owners take care of cleanliness as they take care of it in their homes.

Best check is, when the owner of the hotel eats his own hotel food. If he does not eat it, you should know that it is not fit for you to eat.

Move by MCC officials in cracking hygienic condition of hotels, restaurants and eateries are good from hygiene point of view. But success of such raids depends on how the same is being adhered/followed and implemented is up to the owners of establishments.Wishing all the success for the operation being conducted by the MCC officials. This should be strictly followed and adhered and violators must be penalized severely.

Bold steps. We always take examples of Dubai, Singapore etc to compare quality. When officers take steps towards this in our town we say govt is corrupt, mayor is corrupt, officers are corrupt.

No one knows whats happening inside kitchen. Please read the comment "condition as good as a 'drainage'". OOPS.

Respected sir please introduce this kind of officers in bangalore too. why only in mangalore.

In Bangalore sometimes we get half cooked chicken as well to eat.

Inspite of my earlier observation - that these raids are to pocket a few big bucks ( I still maintain that)- they are doing a good job so far - and we hope to have clean hotels/food etc. for sometime.
It all depends if these kind of surprise raids will be conducted regularly or they will sleep on it for a couple or more years, to be seen - if it is the latter then their motive is clear - to collect as much as possible for themselves by way of bribe - I expect lokayukta to keep a tab on these guys. One should see the hotels in Udupi - but with all that dirt etc - food tastes good - until u reach home and make sorties to the toilet. These raids should be all over the State. First check should be - of the water they use - then the rest.
Well done Inspectors - keep up this good work every where.

I have a question for Mr Srikanth Rao Joint Comissioner
Is it okay for employees to remove shirts while working in the kitchen? These Kitchen employees sweat like hogs while the sweat runs on their Skin and drips. In this condition they prepare the food that the public eats. Picture No:3 shows that Official checks the hands of employees while in picture No:8 shows a employee standing next to officials without a shirt on him. Now I wonder which employee hygience is better filthy hands or Sweat of cooks in the food. God only should save us.

This sort of regulation check on food outlets is indeed very constructive and will provide safeguards to consumers! It is very essential that the inspecting authority follows the correct practices and rules and avoids harrasment and takes an understanding path. The inspections should also include institutions of all types serving food. Nursing homes, hostels, homes for aged, messes, clubs and so on. May good come of this and may it be a regular affair.Thanks!-ijss.

Good Job ... Most of the hotels in India lack basic hygiene. Fortunately Indian cuisine requires "being well cooked / steamed / fried / roasted" which ensures the bacteria is killed, the masala's hide the taste of stale / rotten meat and vegetables, with a few drinks down the gullet no one is aware of what they consume. So this once in a Blue Moon raid is just a eye wash, with inflation, the bribes don't seem to be enough for the MCC
