Mangalore: Plans for Better Waste Management Afoot - DC

Mangalore, Jun 5: Mata Amritanandamayi Math in collaboration with the Karnataka State Pollution Board observed World Environment Day at Town Hall here on Tuesday June 5.

Deputy commissioner Dr N Channappa Gowda in his presidential address mentioned the upcoming plans on waste management and environment conservation in the district. Explaining some of the plans, he said that special importance will be given on planting trees, wherever they are cut due to road extension or other purposes.

In addition to maintaining waste management, he informed that segregation of waste will also be carried out, and waste will be collected from each household and proper disposal methods will be implemented.

"Moreover, we will see that the method reaches even to the panchayat level for maintenance of cleanliness in and around the city," he said.

Referring to one of the programmes of Sarva Shikshana Abhiyana, K N Vijayprakash, CEO of zilla panchayat said that schoolchildren will be sent to rural places and villages in order to expose them to life of agriculture, plantation etc. He also mentioned the importance of inculcating interest in preserving environment among children.

Symbolically, Brahmacharini Mangalamritha Chaithanya of Mata Amrithanandamayi Math distributed plants and saplings to the schoolchildren. As many as 1,000 saplings were distributed to people on the occasion.

Dr Jeevraj Sorake welcomed and Laxman, environment officer thanked the gathering.

Prior to the stage programme, NS Channappa Gowda flagged off a rally in front of Tagore Park to create awareness on environment issues. Students of various schools took part.
