Udupi, Jun 16: Two students were feared drowned in Manipal lake (palla) in the wee hours of Saturday June 16.

They have been identified as Nikila from Hyderabad and Chandra Mouli from Bangalore. They were students of MIT computer science.

They were among the three students who went on a midnight adventure on a boat, reportedly without the pemission of the boat owner. The boat capsized midway, and all three fell into the water.

While Nikila and Chandra have been feared drowned, the other student who was with them, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, managed to swim back to safety.

Police began search operation at 2 am, but could not carry on due to the weather. On Saturday rescue efforts resumed, but both are yet to be discovered.

A case has been registered in the Manipal police station.

This is stupidity of the young minds where they think everything on earth can be on their terms.. God will not have wanted to take these young souls... but by doing such stupid things what conduct do they display?
They are gone.. and hope the others learn a lesson from this tragedy..

two precious lives lost over a silly dose of fun. They were in an age group where reasoning takes back-seat, and fun does not have any definition.Lets not blame parents or those unfortunate students as this is nothing but a quirk of destiny. For all those blaming parents remember, parents don't accompany their children to college .and no youngster think individually in a group Let us join in condoling the bereaved families.

Divya,It is nice to know that you know these kids personally. You are blaming 'why they left the boat unattended?' Do you want them to clear it as toddlers come beyond midnight to enjoy riding? I am also being Insider in Manipal and knowing personally students of one particular college who are 'accident prone', I can tell you virtually Nothing ,rememeber nothing can stop these kids ( which you were also a part and know it well) embrace such mishap unless they have responsible heads on their shoulders.
You said we are pathetic as we did not do stupid things during our youth, are you justifying their death? if so still two more boats are there,, give a try...
There is a limit for everything and you are not a pig head to know where draw a line...

I feel pity for the parents. These irresponsible students venturing out of the hostel at mid-night, that too to the lake in the rainy season,is beyond imagination. They should have had some sense. they were not school going kids. They should have realised with what great difficulty and sacrifice their parents spend for their education.this incident should be an eye opener to all the students out there. may the departed souls rest in peace.

All 3 students who went to the lake for boating at midnight 2:00am are living in the hostel this shows hostel has least restrictions or discipline. Is the institution trying to attract the student crowd to Manipal showing the freedom available here?
There are so many rubbish things taking place in the Manipal Lake area, due to this they had cut down 50% of the trees around it. But is this sufficient? If there is a gate, time restriction or some monitoring then some incidents can be reduced and there is a serious necessity for it.
Other than this many female students have complained guys coming on bikes or auto and molesting or hitting them and escaping, many incidents which are not known to anyone.
Blaming parents as the main cause is not so correct since bad friend & company have the capacity to change the circumstances around the person.
Students taking liberty of their freedom may end up in severe disaster, once the incident, all are mere spectator’s parents undergo the agony. There is a loss in the moral values in this place which needs severe consideration.

Miss Divya, I agree with your comments, every adult has done some stupid things in their life time, but this is not the way of doing things like playing with your life. Was there any emergency to go boating at 2:00 am in the morning? Is it a common activity in that area? One should know the limits and this incident is an awakening call for rest of the adventurous youngsters. May their soul Rest In Peace.

    Divya/Manipla,

Strange observations and comments. We never told that students should not enjoy. But there are limits.. Why to go out on the boating in the midnight that too in rainy day and that too the lake is full of water and that too taking the boat without the knowledge of its owner. Its nothing but sheer stupidity and foolishness. If the boat is left unattended. it doesnt mean that any one can take it for a ride. If any car is left unattended you cant drive it away. In your comments wisdom should prevail. Its commonsense and sheer wisdom if applied could have averted this tragedy. If in the day time, if the boat is capcised, people would have responed to the rescue call. In that place, in the midnight, even spirits or devils wont roam about. There is a saying in kannada,If we say dont sit on the shit and eat, you people will reply that you will dip in th eshit and eat.. This is the attitude and arrogance in our modern days youoth. All the best. Oh Lord please protect all our youngsters and give them wisom and give them long life..

I think these kids shouldn't have gone boating if they didn't know how to swim. It's very sad to see 2 precious lives are loosing in this way. Ms. Divya, with all due respects, yes we had fun. but if you aren't confident of handling the situation, you should restrain yourself from doing it. yes education is important, but knowledge always makes difference. It's really painful to see the students of a reputed institution lost their lives just bcoz they didn't know how to swim.

    May their souls RIP.

hi people stop blaming parents and accusing the kids things like this do happen how many of us have stopped eating ice cream because its bad for health or dont want to do bunji jumping if offered to us its just a split second dececion some times go wrong if they wld come out f it they wld say da story for the rest of our life to their kids n to their friends..if they wld come to u and say u this trust me we all wld want to do it ..its just time people stop judging instead give some tips how this can be avoided like encoraging every one to take swiming classes, fixing the boat with drown sensors ,making sure each boat has life jacket and about the guy who told about the army m pretty sure you will send ur kids to army :-0

Very Sad and tragic incident.I wonder the feelings of their parents living far away with great hopes and self sacrifice for their children. All this eroded in just a few minutes of struggle against mother nature.

To all students whether it be in Manipal or elsewhere, please understand the sacrifices we make as parents just to see our children prosper in life through good education.A good education, a good degree is the best asset your beloved parents can give you.Remember that Parents give their very best to you students. You have to live up to their expectations.

My deepest sympathies to the bereaved families of these 2 students. May these 2 students souls Rest in Peace.

abhijit, hyderabad: I agree with you that there were no life guards. But didnt those 3 people ever know abt that? Even after knowing doing such things is called as foolishness and over confident. First of all going for boating in the midnight is not right activity. Then can you blame on lifeguards there? Even if lifeguards were there in the day time this incident was for sure. because life guards cant stay awake for 24 hours just to save such irresponsible people. and if you fell so sad now why didnt you avoided them going there? Because you didnt knew that they are going for boating at that time of night and u were sleeping. Even if there were life guards were there they were not in the positiong to save them.

This is nothing but merry making trip by the ill fated students. Why they have to do the boating in midnight. Day time is the perfect time for boating as there are life guards on duty and other people around who can respond to SOS and rescue calls.. The students should realise that the main purpose is to study and not to merry making. Even if they want enjoyment they should resort to legal and most accpted means and not midnight outings... Its sad that two prospective software engineers have been lost and may their soul rest in peace....
