Mangalore: Deserted in a Desert, Man Pleads Mother for Help

Mangalore: Deserted in a Desert, Man Pleads Mother for Help

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Jun 23: He went to Saudi Arabia to be employed as an office boy, hoping to live a better life for himself and for his family. Now, Ashraf of Ullal near here is made to work in a desert day in and day out, with not enough food to sustain him.

Ashraf's mother Asiyamma has urged police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh to take steps to bring Ashraf back to India. In her statement, she said that one Farooq from Manjeshwar had lured Ashraf with the promised of a lucrative job as office boy, for which he also took Rs 60,000 as charges. At Saudi airport, another person from Manjeshwar, Abdullah, received him and handed him over to a Saudi national.

A few days later, Ashraf called home saying that he was in a desert and was being made to work day and night. There was not enough food either, he said. That was the last time he called, said Asiyamma.

As there was no communication from Ashraf, Asiyamma met Farooq. He assured that he would trace Abdullah with the help of some people from Manjeshwar over there. However, Asiyamma was never give any information about her son's whereabouts.

Two months later, there was a missed call from a Saudi number, and when called back, it turned out to be Ashraf, who had called from someone else's mobile number. He said that he was being beaten up by his employers, not given enough food and made to sleep in the desert. "My health has deterorated," he is understood to have said, pleading his mother to save him.

"I was aghast listening to him. With the help of my brothers, we got in touch with Abdullah. He demanded Rs 1.5 lac to release Ashraf. We cannot afford to pay so much, hence I have approched the police for help," said Asiyamma.

She said that she suspects Farooq of foul play, adding that he in turn may have been cheated by Abdullah. She has urged the poilce commissioner to insvestigate the matter.

Don't worry Ashraf there are many many like you sailing in the same boat. I can understand the feeling of the mother for her son who is going through the torture. People want to go abroad and work without knowing the consequences and hardship they will have to go through after paying a hectic hard earned amount. The agents give high hopes and after getting the amount wash their hands. Even the immigration department warns all before taking up jobs and they should go through the proper channel. I hope the Indian and Saudi government help this young guy and is returned safely as soon as possible before the employer makes some false charges against Ashraf and he be put in jail. There have been many cases like this in the past. Our only prayers that he will be free and return back to India.

    Dear Rahul Varma, Honappa Kudru/Kallianpur/Panipat.

I am a Non Muslim, and agree with the comments of husain, udupi/khobar.

I cannot say everything is great in KSA, but for normal expats (Not to those wanting to have rave parties etc) saudi Arabia is one of the best countries in the world, to make a good living. Life is comparitiely safe than other countries, harassment of NON MUSLIMS (be it from Govt agencies or local citizens) is totally nil (Apart from few minor exceptions).

Yes Indian labourers do face problems from local employers at times, but that is due to non interference of the Indian agencies to come to employement agreements with the Saudi Labour organisations.

Saudi Arabia of today is not the same, what people of yester years know about KSA. Ksa is advanced in all sectors of industry, Petro chemicals/food industry/construction/consumer related items, the economy is strong. Social life and entertainment sector is getting better. In fact KSA is a part of the modern world.

Saudi Arabia, has high regards for India. This can be seen in the way the last Indian deligation led by the PM was received and entertained. (Which no other country in the world were lucky to get)

SR to USD 30 years ago was about 3.75 and today it is also same.

These are my personal views, other Indian expats may have their own views, not necessarily same as mine

I agree with Ismail. Following steps can help
1.Prompt measure required to alert Indian Embassy in Saudi and Saudi Embassy in Delhi to ensure the person is evacuated and send back to India. (Fraud case can be tackled locally).

    2. Register all the possible employee-whereabouts and contact details plus employment details at NRI cell to ensure a tracking mechanism for Indian workers in foreign country-ensure mechanisms to check the workers aren't exploited..

    3. Given the high amount of South Indians in Saudi, the Indian embassy in Saudi should have an Ambassador, preferably a well educated and broad minded, Muslim/Keralite/South Indian to facilitate seamless interaction with Saudi Officials to ensure the interest of country and the Indian workers, religious pilgrims are taken care of.

Dont blame, Saudi Arabia, or the Saudi's, but blame and take to task our own country men, who are involved in such things to make money.

This is not a isolated incident. There are many Indians living in the desert, looking after the live stock, some are lucky to have good employers, and some like Ashraf are not.

But the culprits are Indian middlemen themelves, who give false promises of jobs/salary etc to sell the visas for a high price, knowing that once in Saudi it is difficult for the employee to return.

If middlemen Farooq and Abdullah are arrested and made to pay the expenses of Ashraf and make them pay for his return, such things will be reduced. I hope the Indian embassy will intervene and check the credentials of Farooq and Abdullah if they are in fact allowed to recruit people from India.

Police Commissioner can arrest middleman but I don't think the case will move further. The man said to be in KSA @ least give his contact number or friend's or he could communicate the matter with even an stranger to pass it to any Indian @ least or some information about his whereabouts.Indian Consulate or NGOs of Indian origin, particularly IFF,an NGO pioneering in services to Indian Community and that also whoever in SOS.Alternatively,Aysamma can approach DC and he will forward the request to MOE which in turn reaches concerned jurisdiction of the consulate in KSA.The information provided in the report is anyway not helps any NGO or individual to reach or to refer this case to concerned authority.

A true story and meantime very sad too.People think going middle east means you will get rich overnight. It is not the one case of cheating, there arises many stories of housemaid, drivers and the shepherds who sometime face hardships from thier owners.Sometime we are lucky enough to work in gulf and sometime we are not, like the case of Ashraf.May 'God' help him soon to overcome his hardships and the agony of his mother's also .A written complaint to Saudi embassy in India or our Indian foreign affairs Dept.sure help him to release from his present owner in Saudi Arabia.
